Barn or Garage Finds in India

Barn and Garage Finds has always been of much interest across the world and there is a huge following, as historic vehicles are unearthed.

Wiki defines Barn Finds as below

Quote:
A barn find is a classic car, aircraft or motorcycle that has been rediscovered after being stored, often in derelict condition. The term comes from their tendency to be found in places such as barns, sheds, carports and outbuildings where they have been stored for many years. The term usually applies to vehicles that are rare and valuable, and which are consequently of great interest to collectors and enthusiasts despite their poor condition.

Source
We would include Garage Finds too, but with the caveat being that, these cars be
  1. Unrestored and original cars, which have great interest and value to collectors
  2. Of value, as derived from the Marque, Body Style, Provenance, Production figures, rarity in India etc.
  3. Not in use and must have been garaged for many years
  4. Restored many years back, but the car is complete
  5. In long term ownership at the time of the find

We will restrict this thread only for Barn/Garage finds in India. Please note that cars in storage, awaiting restoration as part of a large collection or a restorer's stash will not be considered.

I would like start of this Thread with recent Find in Bangalore!

This 1938 DKW F7 Coupe Cabriolet has been in long term storage by the son of the original owner. This preservation class car was an amazing find!

Re: Barn or Garage Finds in India

This Barn Find also from Karnataka is that of 1932 Plymouth PB Seven Passenger Deluxe Sedan. This car was a one family car and was found in Bellary, Karnataka. Estimated that this car was last used in the late 1970's.

The first sight of the car

The dry weather in Bellary ensured that the car survived, even though the car was in the open

Our member Fazilaliadil had in 2010 put up a thread on his uncles 1959 Chevrolet Impala.

Remember the oil spill technique? Notice the oil skid marks of the tyres on oiled floor in the last pic.

Tough part was to make sure she slides out flat or else, with only a clearance of 6" on the front and rear, there were chances of her scraping the walls.

Re: Barn or Garage Finds in India

The next Barn Find is a 1954 Dodge Convertible. These cars are re-badged Plymouth's sold in India under the Desoto, Dodge and Plymouth badging. Since there was a significant model change in 1955, quite a few of these 1954 cars came into India. These were imported cars being Left Hand Drive.

This car was lying next to a out house in a farm. Was a complete running car, before the front windshield was removed and the car was left to sit in the open. The natural elements caused much havoc on this car.

Re: Barn or Garage Finds in India

This 1946/47 Packard Clipper Barn Find was rescued in 2009 by vintageman. The car was parked and not moved for 33 years!

Quote:
Packard was an American luxury automobile marque built by the Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan, United States. The first Packard automobiles were produced in 1899, and the last Detroit-built Packard in 1956, when they built the Packard Predictor, their last concept car.

Packard bought Studebaker in 1953 and formed the Studebaker-Packard Corporation of South Bend, Indiana. The 1957 and 1958 Packards were actually badge engineered Studebakers, built in South Bend.

Re: Barn or Garage Finds in India

This Garage Find is that of a 1947 Daimler DB 18. Whilst the car was known, it was not in the public domain as it was garaged for more than 25 years. Very few had actually seen this car during the period, and I consider myself fortunate to have acquired this car in 2016

Opening the garage door after many years

The reason the car is collectible is
  1. The marque being Daimler
  2. Ex-Mysore Royal car
  3. Very original and complete car
  4. Only 2500 units produced from 1946-48

Here are the specifications of the Daimler

The current update on this car it that it is under restoration detailed here (Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon)

This rare convertible is probably one of just two similar cars in the country. Originally ordered for a Baroda princess, the car was damaged while unloading at the docks and delivery never taken. That's when the first Indian police commissioner of Bombay saw the car and bought it, and remained in his family after his untimely demise. The car was largely preserved untouched in its garage in Pune from the 1970s, and only came out last year for the first time in over 40 years.

I am sure that there are many interesting Barn Finds and look forward to contributions from others to this thread.

KPS, as always V&C threads from you are a delight to read and pour over. Keep them coming. I never cease to be amazed by where you find these gems and how on earth do you have the patience, the perseverance and the knowledge of how to restore them.

PS: Please let us in to your secret - how many barn doors have you opened so far

Yes, absolutely agree that this car deserves to remain in the preservation class- I mean bodily/cosmetically! Especially if that's the original paint on it! We've had too much of 'restoration' examples going around lately!
Those stickers in the windscreen are as priceless as the car too- hope they are preserved forever.
The MYB 26** regn. would be of the early '60s, incidentally.

Re: Barn or Garage Finds in India

The Mercedes 170V Roadster is a jewel and most desirable of all 170V produced, which makes this 1938 Barn Find very important.

The current owner is restorer of repute and is confident of rescuing this car.

Amazing thread KPS! I love reading about Barn Finds - never found much details about Indian Barn Finds - but finally we have one now.

The Bristol would also need a special mention here.
