Spot on . It does appear to be a 1934 Opel 6. Though ,I must confesses that I had to do my homework to confirm the same.

Not sure how much truth is there in this story, but I refuse believe that cars like these have rotted away.
There is nothing incorrect to what you are saying, but let me refine this a bit.

Many of the cars with extensive woodwork did not survive. For example, world wide the more 1928-31 Ford A's have survived due to their steel body than the wooden bodied Chevrolet.

Sourcing parts and tyres we another major problem, that is why lot the cars went into derelict condition.

Export of cars were banned on 6th June 1972 as seen here (Export and Import Laws for Vintage cars). However, sadly many cars went abroad illegally.

It must be kept in mind that the cars which got exported we very desirable due to marque, body style, history etc. Fortunately some the great cars still remain. Further some of cars have been re-imported in the recent past, like to Rajkot Rolls Royce, "Star of India".

When the wealth of the families also diminished, the next generation probably lost connect with their family history and lot of these cars were scrapped. Family litigation leading to these cars, which were not seen to be valuable, eventually going into the ground, was also experienced

Many cars were dieseled and used as taxi's and were eventually scrapped.

Hope I have answered your question

Cheers

Thank you KPS for the trouble you took. The three indentation show lines at the tyre line, the latches on the dickey were my final confirmation marks. My maternal grandfather owned one from c.1936 (or was it 1935) to his death in 1998. Single owner for 62 years! Most unfortunately my uncle sold it for a song in early 2000s without even consulting me. Imagine.: Sadly now it has gone. Though it found a good home with a BHPian known for his vintage collection. One day I intend to buy it back. I'll seek your advice then on how to maintain it. Parking spot has been arranged for

Very well said, history cannot be changed or deleted, however it can be inspiring in a positive way, we can learn from our mistakes and work for conservation, that said this debate can go on about removing the pictures, some people want to demolish the colonial statues and buildings, rename the cities, endless topic, which we will not enter into, no offence meant to anyone, the thread is about cars and lets please keep it that way.

Till late 90's and well into 2000's, if you walk the densely populated areas of TN cities you would have feasted your eyes on many modified Studebaker, Cadillac, Chevy's which were used as Bridegroom car for marriages. In narrow gullies of Royapetta, Saidapeta many of them were languishing and rotting away. Chennai still has few garages which have really great nostalgic collection of vintages.

As times have changed, there was a market for salvage but then most of them were just cut and recycled.

I believe Uthumalai is in Tiruvelveli Dist, only a few km away from there.

The ca 1936 ex-Travancore Lincoln K also seems to have gone there (MDT-952). Believe they still have a Madurai registered Buick Eight (MDU-2400)

"Uthukuli" is much closer to Salem.

A seemingly identical car was in Calcutta in period, and survives in a private collection. Likely to be two different cars.

I stand corrected, Uthumalai is near TENKASI which was part of Tirunelveli district till a few years ago.

Unfortunately not that I know of. The attached poor pictures should be the same car.

The advertisement shows what it would have looked like. Coachwork by Willoughby.
