Re: Pics: Vintage & Classic cars in India

Here are some photos of cars I clicked at the Statesman Rally, some 15 years back or so. These are photos only of those cars which no longer attend the Calcutta rally either because a) They've fallen into disrepair or the owners are not interested in taking part b) The cars have left Calcutta or c) They no longer survive.

The current whereabouts of most of these cars are well known and they have been covered on this forum but a few may have disappeared so I thought that sharing these may dig up some light on the missing cars. I'm sure our regulars will identify a lot of the cars and also unearth those which may have disappeared

I too have a picture of this Dodge. Did it belong to one Mr Gautam ..... ? I forget his surname.

The Plymouth is still in its pristine condition and is safely parked in Priya cinema these days:

There also used to be a 1940's Chrysler Fluid Drive in cream with a WBB ... registration. This car was a daily driver even in the early 1980's and would be spotted frequently in the New Market area. I don't know where it is these days?

I don't think the Dodge belonged to Gautam Mukherjee, if that's who you're referring to.

Thank you for identifying the Plymouth! So this is the Priya Cinema owner's car parked in the lobby. I've not been to Priya in ages so I didn't know that this was the car everyone talked about.

I have no idea on the Chrysler. I have never seen one in Calcutta ever, but that doesn't mean there aren't any left.

Oh, I didn't upload the pics of the 1932? Cadillac V8 that was restored here and then went on to Bombay I think. I liked the colour scheme when the car was in Calcutta.

These two cars were part of two separate collections and are no longer in Calcutta.

This Fiat is a part of a larger collection and though still in town, I don't recall seeing it in recent events.

VCCCI Calendar for 2014 is full of events.

1) The first event is on Sunday 26th January 2014 on Republic Day in the morning and our Vintage & Classic Cars would be joining the Parade which is being held at Marine Drive for the first time.

Limited number of 20 convertibles and 5 sedans are participating.

2) A Delhi to Gurgaon Rally has been planned for 1st & 2nd February 2014 and 10 cars from Mumbai are invited. To and fro freight and hotel accommodation is being provided.

3) HMSCI in association with FICCI has organized a Rally to Lahore-Pakistan ...................

4) Our Annual Fiesta will be held on Sunday 16th February 2014 in Mumbai......................

5) Pune event dates will be sent soon.

Please rush your entries immediately.

Its a great sign of things to come that more events are providing freight and accommodation gratis. Will hopefully encourage more participation.
This was a useful post.

1) Republic day parade: 20 convertibles and 5 sedans participated. Wow!

2) This was the useful part. My Lancia is now in Delhi and taking part in the rally. But not because of VCCCI. I am aware that several car owners were contacted by VCCCI on phone and were being requested to participate. But not me. I applied directly.

The owner of VCCCI was entrusted with the task of transporting the cars to Kalamboli for loading, but he refused to transport the Lancia. It was driven there at midnight and did NOT break down.

Vintage Rallies & Shows in India-loaded-lancia.jpg

The owners man Friday keeps on taunting the car and my friend who is driving it there. Maybe they worry that it will overshadow the worlds only Hudson. See the DNA snipped below.

Vintage Rallies & Shows in India-dna.jpg

The feedback I got is that the arrangements are supperb, transport for the car was paid for, hotel is 5 start superb and also paid for, a car with driver has been provided, every car has been fuelled, I think 35 Litres was filled in. Compare this with the lunch boxes VCCCI gives, and a buffet lunch. Delhi colleagues are not only good friends, but great hosts.

DNA ofcourse got it wrong. They keep harping that this is the only 1933 8 cylinder Hudson known, partially true because it is the only known tourer, sedans do exist, atleast 7 to 8 cars. Below are photos of such survivors. Note the headlight lenses, the India car has plain glasses and yet wins the concourse. So it all a matter of supressing facts for convenience to suit wrongful boasting.

Vintage Rallies & Shows in India-hudson-8-cul.jpg

Vintage Rallies & Shows in India-hudson-8-cyl.jpg

3) I am looking forward to this rally happening. If successful, maybe a trip to Sri Lanks, Burma, Bangla Desh? Can be great fun.

4) As unexpected, this rally is postponed and FCCCI will have an event.

5) Lets await this.
I am looking for reports on the Delhi rally in the next few days.

Cheers harit

Vintage Rallies & Shows in India-deepak-marwah-his-son-raghav-their-1947-pontiac-silver-streak.jpg
It is Sunday morning and Deepak Marwah and his son Raghav are carefully navigating their gleaming 1947 Pontiac Silver Streak along a twisting road south of Delhi. There are a couple of wrong turns but we get to where we are heading and the passengers in the back seat discover that riding in this 67-year-old wonder is as comfortable as sitting on a sofa.

“I’ve had the car for 15 years,” Mr Marwah says of his American car, which happens to be coloured British racing green.
The drive was a bit of fun. But next month, Mr Marwah and other members of the Heritage Motoring Club of India are hoping to accomplish something rather more ambitious – a road trip to Pakistan.
If all goes to plan – it remains if – 100 members intend to drive a convoy of 40 classic cars and 10 motorbikes across the Pakistan border. On the other side they will be met by 30 classic cars owned by Pakistani enthusiasts who will escort them to Lahore.
“My family were originally from Peshawar,” says Mr Marwah, 55, who owns a film and television studio. “But this will be my first trip to Pakistan.”
There is more to the trip than fun though. The members believe that people-to-people contact can work where government-to-government contact may not.
“This contact is extremely important,” says Atul Anand, who owns an IT business in Delhi and who plans to make the journey in a 1949 tomato red MG Y-type.
Mr Anand’s family originally came from Lalamusa, a town in what is now Pakistan’s Punjab province. He said he had a number of Pakistani friends and had visited on several occasions. He is hoping he will be accompanied by his father, who is aged 98.
The enthusiasts plan to drive 30 miles from the Indian city of Amritsar along a recently upgraded section of the Grand Trunk Road to the border crossing at Wagah. From there it is around 20 miles to Lahore.

Their counterparts on the other side, members of the Vintage and Classic Car Club of Pakistan, are equally passionate. Last month, the club held an event that involved members driving 1,700 miles from Karachi to Peshawar.
Among those taking part was Karim Chhapra, a Karachi industrialist who has among his collection of cars a 1924 silver Rolls-Royce Ghost, originally built for the Nawab of Bhawalpur. It is said the vehicle was used to drive Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, to the Sindh Assembly building in Karachi on 14 August 1947 to formally announce the country’s birth.
The only thing stopping the cross-border coming together of men and machines is red tape. The VCCCP’s president Mohsin Ikram told me from Karachi that previous attempts had failed because the two sides could not get the necessary clearance for the vehicles.
He said the club’s influential members had been busy trying to secure approval and had reached out to the office of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, himself a classic car enthusiast who owns a 1974 Mercedes Benz 450 SLC. “We are trying to make it happen,” he said.
Mr Ikram owns 10 vintage and classic cars. Next month he plans to drive a 1947 Lincoln Continental Convertible. And if the notorious bureaucracy means the two clubs don’t get permission, he has a fall-back plan.
“We will ask the Indian members to cross the border on foot where we will then be waiting for them,” he said. “We will then drive them into Lahore in our vehicles and have a show for them.”

Any news about the Pakistan rally?

Would be nice to see pictures of cars crossing the wagah border and being received by our neighbours!

Sir, It has been cancelled, reasons given by VCCCP was that the security clearance was not given by the Pakistan government ( as per Mohsin Ikram's (VCCCP President) post on his FB page).

Quote:
Mohsin Ikram
it's official now, Amritsar - Lahore - Amritsar rally has been cancelled by Government of Pakistan in a meeting on 3rd Feb due to security concerns. Our efforts will continue to start bilateral car rallies between the two countries and hope that our efforts since 2004 become stepping stones in achieving this.
Sad, But true !!

regards
Kartik

It looks like a later Austin Seven chassis. These kind of displays were common in colleges and other institutes as teaching aids.

Re: Vintage Rallies & Shows in India

The next two days will see oldies traversing the streets of Poona.
Karl, I do hope you take lots of pictures. A bit hot for the cars and drivers with temperatures soaring, not forgetting the nightmarish traffic, especially autos and two wheelers.

Good luck to all, maybe we will even see some of the recent imports!!

has a trip to the Poona museum been included I wonder. The museum would make a nice mid rally halt, or for that matter , it could even end there with the prizes being distributed amidst the exhibits.
