Here is a nice unusual one

http://vadodara.quikr.com/Vintage-Po...AdIdZ189381560

A Pontiac, probably 1946/48? The ad says 1942 but it also says it is 100 years old

Thanks Ajay for the information. The car is genuinely owned by the Chawak family since 1929. It was bought by them from Nagpur.

They have been maintaining it quite well since then. The car has participated in all the V & C Rallies at Nagpur since the 1980's. I remember seeing it first in 1988. It has been awarded many, many times for maintennace, best outstation participant, and also some times as the overall rally winner. However, the car was conspicious by its absence in the 2013 Nagpur rally. The Chawaks have also taken it to Mumbai a few times and to Bhopal for rallies.

But I cannot come to terms with the fact that the Chawaks are now wanting to sell off the car so dear to the family since 85 years.

And price, its a free for all - both for the seller and the buyer.

The last time this car was seen on 13/02/2011 at Nagpur. In one of the pictures, Mr Vasant Chawak is seen in the foreground.

The car certainly looks restorable, but as you have mentioned, the taxi board means that it's surely been dieselised.

Also what are the formalities of converting a taxi into private reg?

I'm almost sure that paperwork hassles will see this very restorable car go to the ground.

Too bad it's a wagon too. Pretty rare if you ask me.

That brings this question to my mind- if it indeed were used as a taxi, how come it's retained the normal (original?) colour combo? Maybe private taxi so not Black + Yellow but didn't the former have colour codes as well?

Tourist taxis never had the black + yellow paint scheme, at least in Kerala. Only the taxis with just a district/city permit had that scheme if I remember correctly.

Considering the black on yellow number plates were introduced within the last 15 years, it seems the car was running properly even at the turn of the century!

Not just in Kerala, this was applicable nation wide. And the Rajkot region had many of these wagons doing taxi duty till not as long back as one thinks. Of course they were dieselised though.

This wagon would make a fun project for anyone daring enough. Use on diesel for a while too. Someday target retrofitting the petrol mill, till then enjoy the economy

Here is a similar case - a '55 Plymouth wagon I saw last in Pune.

I spoke to the seller today and the car was dieseled way back in the 60's , he also has a ford mercury for sale which was also used as taxi, doesn't have the original petrol engine with him, discarded long bank. The dodge was last driven couple of years back and he also told me that though he got lot of calls in last two days, every one has been asking for the petrol engine.
