'Tis a swap- A Diesel W111 never existed.

Very likely the original six cylinder M127 was replaced with the Mercedes Benz OM616; one of the toughest Merc diesel blocks ever.

The OM616; was also known as the 'Matador Engine' - The OM616 powered the 'long-chassis' Tempo Matador - a.k.a the F307- and still powers the Tempo Traveller - (which itself is a Mercedes Benz TN/T1) to this day.

To quote (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_OM616) :

In 1982, Bajaj Tempo, now Force Motors, signed a deal with Daimler Benz to manufacture the OM616 Mercedes engine under licence in India for fitting on its line of vehicles. This Mercedes engine gave the company a technological edge over other Indian manufacturers leading to the success of several Bajaj Tempo models.
The Mercedes OM 616 or its variants still power the light commercial vehicles of Bajaj Tempo, including the tempo traveller, the new Excel series of trucks and the Trax range of multi-utility vehicles.
