That W140 gives me the creeps because of its condition and that the badge is "SEL400" when its actually supposed to be "400SEL".

Many years ago I saw a W140 S600 for sale in KL. I still have the contact numbers of the garage that sold it. It was blue in colour, asking price was Rs 6L only and the only claim was that the car was in running condition...

It was a Delhi Reg. Am not sure whether it was possible to get a Delhi NOC as it was over 15 years old

The picture appears to be downloaded from a foreign website. This particular model was never assembled in India. Beware of such advts where sellers cannot display pictures of their own cars if any and quote astronomical prices.

No in this case it appears genuine. There are many pictures of the car. It has Delhi registration and the guy lives very close to my place according to the Ad. Can always check him out but the Vitamin M part is not there with me

This is a 1955 Dodge Coronet and is a LHD car. Car was imported at some point. Probably the only Coronet as far as I know and is in Bangalore.

28L for a previous gen XJ and 10L for a 2 decade old V12 Merc. Either the sellers are silly, or there are buyers in India willing to pay stupid money.

Neither of these cars would sell for anything over 2 lakhs INR in US/EU/UK. The W140 with the V12 would probably sell for more if sold for parts to a scrapyard, and would still be less than six Indian figures worth of cash.

They will obviously sell at much higher valuations than in the West because of the low availability and also the maintenance costs(Labour) will be lesser than there.Also the aspirational value is still higher for these cars here especially in smaller cities and towns

Funny. Maintenance costs doesn't just mean labour. Over 80% costs generally tend to be due to the parts as this is a Jaguar and a Mercedes we are talking about. There is too little used parts inventory for these cars in India, so there's a good chance the parts for maintenance might be new, all of which are imported. Consequently parts for these cars are always expensive in India, in most cases over 2-3X more than "there".

So contrary to your statement, maintenance costs for these cars are ALWAYS more than "there".

Yes aspirational values and rarity of these cars here do tend to push the resale prices so high. However does not change the fact that if someone's paying 10 lakhs for a V12 from '96 in India, the buyer either has no clue what is actually going to break the bank OR has deep pockets and is an enthusiast.

Regarding Maintenance I specifically mentioned Labour since I was expecting this to come up.It is not necessarily persons with deep pockets or enthusiasts who buy these cars as they will be studied buyers.The reality is, actually there are lot of persons who end up buying these cars just because it is available at a fraction of their exshowroom values albeit a decade later. There are people who buy a mass produced diesel contessa which is 25 years old for 3 lakhs!!! Many of them could be people who could not even afford to buy a 2 wheeler when these cars were ruling the car scene.
