Re: Classic Cars available for purchase

All through my early childhood and growing up years on the Tea and Coffee Plantations of Southern India, the Massey Ferguson Tractor along with its straight up snorkel exhaust and its matching trailer, was a fixture. Classic, British-Built and fully imported in some cases, imported and assembled by TAFE Madras in some cases and manufactured in India under license by TAFE, in some cases.
These tractors always had steel wheels and were usually painted a stormy grey (with red or dark green or silver wheels) or a dull red (with dark green or red wheels or silver wheels) or in some cases a dark green with red wheels or silver or grey). All of them had hand operated throttle levers located next to the steering wheel.
As per the Motor Vehicle laws for commercial vehicles the front portion and radiator grille areas were always painted a bright yellow.
Almost all of the Companies who owned the Tea Estates used them for 30-40 years in some cases.
They were always excellently maintained and ran like the well oiled machines that they were.
I actually learned to drive on one of these, along with its trailer. Quite a task for a teenager I can tell you. But once you learn, you’ll tend not to forget.
It was really quite an experience driving one of these tractors along those hilly, winding, 8 foot wide roads inside the estates and negotiating hairpin bends etc with or without a load in the trailer.
Fantastic!

From the registration number it seems to be the car from Cochin which was later sold to Trivandrum. Was having a dual tone colour scheme.Think it was fitted with the ambassador petrol engine.
Hope the asking price is not the 'astaguru effect''

Re: Classic Cars available for purchase

Hello there. I have always wanted to purchase a HM Contessa, but I have few doubts which have held me back from spending.
I would really appreciate any advise/info regarding the following points.
1.Can I get a Contessa under 1 lakhs? (any leads/offers are welcome)
2. Are parts for the contessa available?
3. Any good mechanics that work on the Contessa in Pune?
4. Is the Contessa okay for a 100 km drive twice a week? Considering the engine life and reliability.

Hello,
1. It is difficult to get a decent unmolested Contessa below 1 lakh .
2. Mechanical parts can be procured but its very difficult to get Body Parts.
3. I stay in Bangalore and own a 1990 Petrol Contessa for the past 16 years attended by the same mechanic but no Idea about workshops in Pune.
4. Contessa is a very reliable Car, if maintained well and can comfortably do long distances.

Re: Classic Cars available for purchase

That would be Captain Nair's Silver Shadow. Is that really for sale or some dubious dealer has put it up. I don't see any pics on the ad.

Here is a pic of the car participating in the Economic Times Rolls Royce Centenary Rally (Pics : Economic Times Rolls Royce Centenary Rally. Includes 2004 Rolls Royce Phantom)

Quote:
Captain Nair: The nonagenarian hotelier possesses a unique assortment of cars, ranging from the luxurious to the basic. The Leela Hotels chairman's cars include three Rolls-Royces (Silver Shadow, Phantom and Ghost) and a Bentley. And yes, a Tata Nano too. Every evening, Nair can be seen going for a drive with his wife, Leela in the 1973 Silver Shadow or the new Phantom.

I somehow think that the family will not let that car go for emotional reasons. Even if they did, it would be sold via word of mouth to some major collector
