Re: Standard cars in India

A mk1 Herald used for a Goa carnival. Rear axle appears converted to rigid type.

Found in a facebook group album.

Re: Standard cars in India

Found on a facebook group I'm in- a later model (1974-77) Standard Gazel apparently freshly turned into a "baraat" car at Madras. Roof of the car can be seen placed right behind it!
Good to see these cars still existing around there, although by no means in a deserving condition as in this case!

A 'Ten in Mumbai

Chanced upon this MSW registered 'Ten at Fort, in Mumbai, in my regular parking lot. Though dusty, someone has obviously driven her here and parked.
Nice!!

Oh of course!! How could I forget - we saw this car when we visited the Bhiwandi school campus.
Besides, the 'Shri Bhairav' sticker is the give-away

It is indeed Anil Jain's Pennant. The car belonged to his in-laws IIRC and was brought to Rajasthan from Madras in the late 80s. twas previously Black (see pics.) before Anil brought it to Bhiwandi a couple of years ago and restored it.
I remember he had asked me for help with the original front grille (just the horizontal bars) and I had even arranged one from a scrapped Pennant in Calcutta (not bothering with the new name! ) through a fellow tbhpian who was then based there and did help me with many other parts from the scrap car. The front grille was left behind with him and I'd requested him to send it over to Anil instead, which he'd assured me of doing later, as he was busy then. However, the grille apparently never reached Anil!
He later told me he was putting the car up for sale. Lost touch with him after that.

Re: Classics available for purchase

My FB friend Mr Abhishek Kushte sighted this Standard 10 at Chor Bazaar, Behind J.J. Hospital, Mumbai, and has posted its picture on FB. This car is to be scrapped according to him.

Re: Standard cars in India

Saw this pic. of a Super 10 in Goa posted by someone on facebook. The car is said to have been salvaged and currently 'in storage' hence didnt put the pic. in the Rust in pieces thread.

But what's the chauffeur doing on the running board?
Understand its kinda 'he cannot rid with the high class lady' kinda thing.
But surely he can't be perched like that when the car is moving. Not with the kind of terrain the car would have gone through those days.

Any light on this?

The chauffeur riding on the running board was pretty common, albeit mostly in a special fold out seat - examples that come to mind include the Rewa Daimler, Gondal Lanchester and Rampur Silver Ghost.

Dear Anjan - hello after a long time. I had asked for this car, the price quoted was ridiculously high, the guy was interested in making a fast buck, the documents were not in order, so I sadly walked away. It is still lying there, seems to be THE END for it now!

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Not only drivers, but attendants too rode on the running board. Seats were specially built into the running boards, both front and rear. In case of the front running boards the attendant faced towards the rear of the car.
This was not restricted to times when a lady was driving, even when HE (whoever)was present, attendants sat there, on their external seats

Cheers harit
