Dear Venkat,

I'm seeing this late but not too late to congratulate you on a fantastic restoration! Truly amazing; she looks so authentic and period with that interior and exterior combination.

Neat stuff, really neat

Nice picture.

Place looks kind of familiar as well. Trivandrum Club ? To be in LIFE the person must be a VIP as well, but I am really bad with faces and can't recall.

Best Regards & Drive Safe

Very likely the porch of Cliff House. The person is probably a Communist Party leader (from W.Bengal ?)

Uncanny resemblance with the longest serving chief minister

Re: Standard cars in India

These are the kind of Standard cars I would like to see more of. Apparently Standard's were quite popular in the 1920's.

Cheers harit

Re: Standard cars in India

Spotted this Standard 10 two days back near my office on a busy stretch of Calcutta. I was walking to the Foreign Post office to retrieve some parts for my Merc when I saw this.

Seems to be a daily driver. Looks like it's been modified in various places over the years, the front sits much lower than the rear. Oh well, at least the guy uses it regularly.

Harit, sorry to disappoint

Re: Standard cars in India

Spotted at BHPian Veldeep's parking spot-

A ''topless'' Standard-Triumph Herald;

Note the reflectors positioned inside 'em fintails!

Don't miss the whitewalled Vespa and the Mercedes Benz Fintail () in the background.

MTJ would be a Poona registration- dating from sometime in the mid 'Seventies.

This is a Standard Super 10. Has many spares from the Ambassador fitted, but will agree as you say that it has been kept in ship shape.

A Standard Herald (yep, without the roof ) is seen in this advert, as a baraat car:

Re: Standard cars in India

Has anyone seen these vans before? Are there any survivors?

ORWO was an East German company manufacturing black and white films for photography. They used to import in bulk and repackage into the reels. When both the Germany's merged, this company also died.

Interesting photo, very likely DN Road.

Cheers harit

Re: Standard cars in India

On the registration numbers post I had posted a photo of a Ford Zephyr Six of the first half of the 1950's bearing a Kutch registration number.
Here is a photo of the same car in Mumbai with a Vanguard bearing a Bombay registration.
And then there are two rare photos of this very Vanguard still in the show room, brand new. One of these photos is creased, but it's in that show room. Probably Metro Motors.
BTW, when we bought our SX4 from Vitesse, they took a photo of us with the brand new car and gave it to us.

Cheers harit

Fantastic! I guess this is the photo you were referring to. Look closely, you can see the lettering STANDARD TEN from the showroom window reflecting on the Vanguard.

Also note wide whitewalls fitted to the car in the showroom itself - these were probably unique to the Indian market, the owner's manual of the Standard 10 also shows whitewalls.

I think the bumpers are not original to the car.
And the same car can be seen more recently in an upcoming Bollywood movie- San 75/Pachattar; these are the stills from a trailer, courtesy youtube:

Hope it doesn't end on a tragic note in the movie, going by the chase scene!
