Re: Where is it now? - Lost & Found Classics

I happened to see this well preserved Standard 10, in a running condition, earlier this morning at West KK Nagar, Chennai. The car should be close to 50 years!

I did not have the heart to pass this car though it was chugging along at 30 Kmph!

There was a Standard 10 in the exact same colour scheme, that used to belong to a family friend. It was running until about 6-7 years ago. They used it quite regularly as a family car. I remember that they had fitted a fan on the dash to beat the heat in summer! Sadly, I never got to know when they sent it off to the scrapyard, else I would have saved it for sure.

Spotting this after 8 years. The Chrysler/Talbot Horzon was a front wheel drive car. A flop and a rust bucket. Veey few survived.

Didn't realize the Gazel had this ancient style of gear lever. It looks like the gear lever of my grandfather's Opel 1936 6-cylinder. I always thought that if Standard Motors India had improved upon the suspension's durability and the quality and thickness of the body work especially corrosion resistance the 4-door versions could have competed well against the Padmini. Alas.

Lovely period pics! There must've been taken when the Gazel was newly introduced. The first
pic with the hill seen behind would've definitely been at the standard motors factory at vandaloor- I do remember hearing about the hill behind it and - as per an ex-dealer- that they even had a test track built up it!

Had come across a Herald modified in a similar way here in Hyderabad back in 2001/02! Had a pic. of it too but can't find it off-hand! Sadly, was told the car was eventually scrapped!
