A particularly nice original Mk 1 Herald was spotted here

Very likely to be original paint, the car must have been very sparingly used. The colour would be Phantom Grey?

Nope, it isnt that!

Phantom Grey is purely grey, the colour of the Dharampur Herald, remember?!

This is more of a blue tinged grey. You'd shown me pics. of 2 such cars in the same colour in Pune some time ago, if you remember.

I would have thought it to be the same colour as the Dharampur car, albeit weathered. My mistake I suppose.

No problem! This should help clarify anyway:

Note: Pics. of this car makes me want to mention: this Herald holds a special place in my heart, not just because of it's condition/history but because it was the very first Herald I got to take a ride in (back in 1998 when I first saw her, the car just having arrived to hyd. then!) and got to see in full detail, giving me complete knowledge on the originality aspects of Heralds!

A mk1 Herald in Delhi deserving a good home (no, not implying that its for sale!):

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/1772021-post2914.html

'hope it gets saved in time!

And here's a mk1 Herald I'd spotted a couple of times earlier (uploaded some pics. too once) in the garage where I carry out my restorations. This car turned up again the other day for a tune-up. Incidentally, it happens to be an early (apr '61 as per the PUC certificate! ) model, and is quite complete with even the original gear-lever knob and air-filter intact! barring some glaring alterations, most noticeably the contessa steering wheel/column (ugh! 'was told it was fitted on the owner's insistence, being easier to maneuver! ) and plywood dash and jeep(?) meters, in place of the original lovely black cardboard one with the smiths speedo, and presumably grey steering wheel and column! :(
Plus, for the first time I noticed on this car, the rear suspension has been modified too, to a rigid/beam axle with parallel leaf-springs (as per most older cars), a common mod done on Heralds back then owing to some owners getting peeved with the original rear axle halfshafts breaking apart. But this is not really a worthy remedy, as the handling becomes a pain with this set-up! For this reason, mechanics eventually (thankfully!) stopped carrying out this mod.
While it is possible to revert to the original rear suspension, it is quite difficult, considering the rear part of the chassis has been buggered up to accomodate the new rear axle, as indicated in one of the pics! 'wonder how the rear part of the chassis, once cut, still managed to hang on if it were 'floating'! Maybe it was joined to the rest of the frame at some other point, couldnt really figure out.
'also wonder why the additional loops welded onto the chassis frame (circled) for fitting a leaf spring end?

Some time back, I'd posted pics. of another Herald, a black one, with a similar modded rear suspension.

when i first saw the car, the rear wheels seemed different to me. normally all herald rear wheels stay in a 'V' shape but this one is straight.

is this a herald axle or taken from another one??

Nope, its taken from another car, my mech. identified it as that of a Standard 10. He himself too, had fitted such axles to Heralds while converting a few of them in the workshop where he'd worked back then.
Herald axles are always 3-part, the diff. and the halfshafts being separate. They are known as "swing-axles", as they cause the rear wheels to swing inward and outward while stationary and running respectively.

Meanwhile here's another Herald in a sad state also seen here in hyd:

And here she is at Bangalore club posted in this very thread recently:

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/1719731-post1025.html

And even before that spotted somewhere else in Bangy:

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/905984-post383.html

This car seems to be getting famous lately!

Incidentally, it is known to your FCB-ian imperial s.a, who says it's a one-owner car and was originally white.

Here is one, just to manage for the time-being!

Standard cars in India-mangmk104.jpg

For the benefit of others, this is a very original early (1961-62) Herald mk1, very rare to find original examples of this particular model among Heralds, namely the dashboard and meter, which are in most cases replaced with cheap fabricated plywood ones with local guages!
