It depends . If the person is truely willing then he would go through those posts and learn something else as well. Anyway lets get back to our discussion on Commercial classics.

Hindustan Motors used to offer a half built chassis of the Ambassador. The bonnet, & the front seat with the doors were factory built. At the rear one could build a van/ambulance/pick up truck etc.Does any one have photos of this half built chassis or a vehicle with a body built on such a chassis? I have attached a photo of an Amby where I have marked the cut away part.

These brochures were posted earlier on the forum, showing pick up and stationwagon configurations.

Awesome truck, with an awesome logo !
I somehow remember these kind of trucks as being called "Comet". The "Hippo" series came later, IMHO.

SS,

As far as I remember both Comets and Hippos were there. Comet was the regular single real axle type and were the regular Lorry & Bus Chassis.

Hippos were the "tractor units" and the Multi Axles

Ram, you're absolutely right.
Most of them with the "Comet" logo I remember, were buses.
And "Hippo"s were always the highway warriors !

There was this really awesome looking one called Taurus from AL! I've seen one still used as a milk-tanker.

Comets are usually the lighter duty ones while Hippos are the heavy duty ones, the ones with dual axle at the back.

There are some Hippo's still left in Mumbai, Some are with the Mumbai Fire Brigade which has the typical 90s AL Front Cabin and about 4-5 are there with the Mumbai Traffic Police used as two trucks. which have different looking front Cabin. Will get some pictures. They have the most distinguished engine sound note, very different, harsh sounding and loud.
