Yes, but if I remember correctly the ride in a Bajaj RE was much smoother, less bumpy. When travelling by ricksha, I always preferred a Bajaj RE.

1948 Piaggio TriVespa Ape A

This had a front similar to the classic Vespa.
The rear had an open box with two-bench seats for passengers.
It had a 125 cc engine under the driver's seat.
The metal half doors of the rear tub were removable.

The Classic Commercial Vehicles (Bus, Trucks etc) Thread-1948piaggiotrivespaa.jpg

In the movie Chori Chori(1956), starring Raj Kapoor and Nargis, Bhagwan Dada Palav has a character role.

Bhagwan Dada drives a 1948 Piaggio TriVespa Ape A.
If you can get hold of a DVD or VideoCD of Chori Chori, you can see it.
Bhagwan Dada Palav's wife (played by South Indian actress Rajasulochana) rides in the back tub of the TriVespa.

The movie's story is about a wealthy man, who lives with his daughter (played by Nargis). It had many popular songs like:
  • aaja sanam madhur chaandni mein hum.
  • yeh raat bheegii-bheegii
  • panchhii banoon udtii phiruun mast gagan mein.
  • rasik balmaa dil kyuun lagaayaa tohse
  • jahaan main jaatii huun vahiin chale aate ho.
  • savaa laakh kii "Lottery"
When Nargis runs away from her wealthy father, he announces a reward of Rs. 1.25 lakh to whoever can bring his daughter back to him.
Many common folk aspire to get that Rs. 1.25 lakh, including Bhagwan Dada and his wife.

Remember the song:
तुम अरबोंका हेर-फेर करने वाले राम जी,
सवा लाख की lottery भेजो अपने हि नाम जी.
This song is portrayed by Bhagwan Dada and Rajasulochana.

Perhaps the TriVespa was the ancestor and inspiration of India's whole tribe of autorickshaws.

This Tempo Matador is a regular sight in Pune, I've been seeing it visit the same spot for ages. Wonder how long it will soldier on - this must be the last of its kind in Pune.

For lack of funds and space, I cannot even think of buying something like this, but believe you me this (and the Lambretta 3 wheeler in Pune) is definitely something worth buying. My logic is that 15 years later you will still be able to buy a Rolls or a Model A or a Fiat - no amount of money will find you one of these!

I agree, but is this the best example to buy?

I would love to convert it into something like this with the Lambretta at the back.

Re: The Classic Commercial Vehicles (Bus, Trucks etc) Thread.

What about the original 3-cyl. 2-stroke petrol-engined Tempo Viking ?

I still have strong memories of the buzzing, putt-putting engine and the smell of the distinctive sky blue petrol-oil smoke.

These aren't BEST buses, because this isn't Bombay. These are pics of Chowringee, Calcutta of the early 70s. But yes, the buses are Leyland! Talking of which, am sure you've checked out the stationary one that takes passengers on a gastronomic trip instead, on East Street, Poona!

Bang on Prabal! Calcutta (correct to call it so in this case!) I had the same impression when I saw the construction of the buses, and also the Amby taxi (not to be seen around in Bombay by the 70s atleast!)

However, I reckon it was a bit later than early 70s, maybe late 70s because you can see the movie billboard of a Rajesh Khanna starrer 'Anurodh', which is said to have been released around 1977.

Yes, you are right, and I was wrong about the dateline.

Re: The Classic Commercial Vehicles (Bus, Trucks etc) Thread.

I have a feeling Bombay tbhpians think double decker buses only run in Bombay . A year ago someone posted a DD bus in front of Jeevandeep building in Kolkata. It took a huge effort convincing them that it was indeed, Kolkata!
