I knew that Double decker buses existed outside Bombay.
I should have known this isn't Bombay due to the presence of an Amby taxi.

In the 60's I have seen Albion Double decker and single decker buses in Hyderabad. They were similar to London Transport buses except for the colour.

I found this interesting link discussing about busses, and some in India too.

Spotted 2 Dodge Power Wagons while they were coming back from the Republic Day Parade rehearsal. I wonder how our armed forces still use them considering their ripe old age ...

Zil 131

@Rosso Corsa -Trucks in the picture posted by you are not Dodge Power wagons but ZIL 131 general purpose truck produced by ZIL of Russia, first introduced in 1967.It is powered by a 7 liter V8 gasoline engine, though Diesel powered variants are also available.A civilian variant is also produced called ZIL 130.

This truck serves as a platform for BM -21 Grad - Multiple Rocket launcher. It is used by Indian army mainly as a Multiple rocket launcher platform. Please see the picture below

These are ZIL 131-based missile launchers from the land of Lenin, and not Uncle Sam's Dodge Power wagons! They are more than two decades less ripe in age from what you though they were - although still old!

EDIT:

Aah, I notice frozenIntime has already posted the same info!

Ahh - so these were probably acquired by the Indian Army in the 'good old' days of the Indo-Soviet collaboration - still remember the Indira Gandhi - Comrade Brezhnev summit.. and how the Yanks would see red each time we leant more and more towards the USSR !

Ravi, Indo-Soviet relations actually started in the mid-50s with exchanges between Jawaharlal Nehru and Kruschnev. And then it extended beyond the Soviet Union and included produce from other Eastern-bloc nations too, like Czechoslovakia. Keeping with only military hardware here now, the list encompassed the whole gamut of military transport - ZIL, KrAz, UAZ, Ural, Tatra, T72 Tanks, MIG, Sukhoi, Tuopolev, Antonov aircraft, MIL MI-8 helicopter, Ships and Submarines of various class (purchased or made in collaboration), etc. etc.

In fact the inclination to also buy from the erstwhile Axis factories started developing around the 50s- MB and Man, Nissan to name some.

And we shall desist from touching upon other scientific and cultural collaborations.

Re: The Classic Commercial Vehicles (Bus, Trucks etc) Thread.

The relations between India and the East bloc were strengthened by the attitude of some of our American friends, India had no choice.

But, have you noticed that whenever the Russian trucks are disposed off by the forces, they are ususally broken up. Whereas almost all American trucks continued in civilian duty. But again. very few MAN trucks have seen civilian use, though some did. One reason was the lack of availability of spares. I knew a clock repairer who had got a contract to repair russian clocks from one of the forces, we went together to the russian trade mission asking for these spares but they never responded properly. Maybe our friends did not have spares in their planning.

Cheers harit

Oh for crying out loud! A score of these Tata 1210 trucks are used by the Kolkata police as tow-trucks/wreckers. Everytime you come down here, you catch a glimpse of one and post it in this thread. Sometimes its even the same location (Gariahat and thereabouts) and probably the same trucks.

Quit it doc. Is the Tata 1210 even a classic?

I presume these are the first of the plain TATA trucks, and no longer the T-MB ones. Personally, I like trucks this way - simple and 'clean' with none of the gaudy artwork and other 'sajaawat' that trucks in India are normally seen in! Weird me!

Speaking of which, a friend emailed me this link on youtube of some telugu serial episode on TV, showing a WW2 era Ford truck (or LORRY as we call them down south! ) playing a brief action role. I suspect it would've lost its original Ford engine eons ago.
Trucks like this are still seen around once in a blue moon atleast, although its indeed quite some time since I last saw one around.

Re: The Classic Commercial Vehicles (Bus, Trucks etc) Thread.

And I see a striking resemblence to the 1941 chevy truck . Just wondering how come two different manufacturers had similar design.

Well Chevy came out in 1941 to 1946, Ford had it from 42-47.
