A leaflet for the Tempo Matador from 1969. Note this is already diesel - I think the petrols were two stroke badged Viking (subject to correction).

I remember when the Blore-Mys road was single lane, there used to be these vintage station wagon and ones with the boot as well in the same colours as the taxi, fully loaded with passengers and luggage belching smoke. It had luggage tied to the roof and boot as well.
I guess those were Chevy's and Plymouth's.

Diesel Matador was introduced only in mid 1970s, after the oil crisis of 1973 pushed up fuel prices. Yes, the petrols had a two stroke engine.

Re: The Classic Commercial Vehicles (Bus, Trucks etc) Thread

Can anyone share more details on this Ashok Leyland truck. Was shocked by the length/wheelbase and expected this to be a multi axle for its length. And just look the rear overhang

Looks like a Viking bus chassis used as a truck.

This was the usual case during 90's and early 2000 when Viking chassis was used as automobile carriers, especially 2 wheelers.

You can still see them used to transport sheep.

Re: The Classic Commercial Vehicles (Bus, Trucks etc) Thread

Good evening all.
I came across this Tata-Mercedes publicity photo for the LP312/48 bus chassis. Rather a nice photo I think.
Does the Mercedes building still exist does anyone know?

BTW Karl,
I owned several of the Mercedes version of the Tempo Matador (Mercedes 306D) when I lived in Scotland. Originally it was the Hanomag-Henschel F25 until Mercedes bought the company. The Mercedes version had regular leaf springs at the rear but the front torsion bundle springs were an absolute nightmare to change. Without some serious heavy duty tools and some oxy-acetalyne gear there was no way they were coming out of their hangers!!!!!!!

Ah, when I was young and was a Unimog mechanic also. Now old and incapable of using a 1 in drive socket set - sad really
Cheers
Cedric

Lovely pic.! The 'Z' was always used to denote the RTC (later APSRTC- and now TSRTC) buses' registrations- in the 3-letter prefix, it was HYZ pre-Andhra Pradesh formation, then AAZ, AEZ etc. then AP29Z etc.

Incidentally, here's an Albion mini-bus bearing an HYZ numberplate that I'd clicked a few years ago outside the local RTC HQ in Hyderabad:

Stanher,
That Albion minibus looks like it is an old 1930s Albion truck chassis that got rebodied by the Nizam's State Railways - Road Transport Division. The radiator is very 30s Albion and I don't think they made anything that short after the war, concentrating on heavier vehicles.
Is the old girl still there?
Cheers
Cedric
