Re: The Classic Commercial Vehicles (Bus, Trucks etc) Thread

Here is a lovely unique one - a 1930s Vauxhall Hearse, shot here in Pune in the 1990s

The car was subsequently sold and a platform fashioned for the rear end of the body. This is what it looked like some years back when for sale. It is now in a Pune collection.

In 1924 BOM 30 was registered to Mr. M G Myer, Apollo Bunder. I wonder of these numbers were reassigned at some point, or these lorries were sub-contracted from private owners.

Re: The Classic Commercial Vehicles (Bus, Trucks etc) Thread

This Bussing coach has an interesting history. It was originally fitted out as a camper in Germany, and around 78/79 some hippies overlanded with it from Europe to Goa. Customs here sized contraband narcotics hidden in the panels and the vehicle was confiscated. A friend of mine purchased it in customs auction, and refitted as a coach. He operated a Mumbai Kolhapur service with it from around 1982 to 1990. It has all air suspension and a powerful 11.5 liter underfloor engine amidships. It is LHD but still made better timing than the other Telco/AL coaches on that route.

The coach servives. It is parked in the owner's factory premises.

The last Tata Mercedes Benz truck was produced on June 5, 1969. Trucks made after that date were called only Tata and carried the "T" logo on the bonnet instead of the star. So this particular piece is from the post June, 1969 era.

Thanks for the insight. Till when did this design continue, and what was it replaced by? I assume the forward control cabs were sold alongside? Or were they introduced later?

Tata 1210 became 1210D when the DI engine was introduced in 1969-70. Came in full forward control form (mostly bus chassis but truck version too) as well as long bonnet form. The bonnet/cowl (the front end portion that was made in Tata factory) used to have grey color. Long bonnet 1210D was replaced by shorter bonnet 1210S in 1975 (called semi-forward control truck by Tata) which became 1210SE in 1977. 1210S came with yellow coloured front end structure and the last lot of 1210 long bonnet trucks were also painted yellow. 1210S wasn't a rebadged Mercedes nor a copy of the Mercedes design. Its design was a Tata original.

I got the date wrong in the previous post. 5 June, 1969 was when the first "T" badged vehicle was produced, not the date of production of last star badged vehicle in Tata factory.

Re: The Classic Commercial Vehicles (Bus, Trucks etc) Thread

Hey Guys! New member here

Want to share some info related to some Vintage vehicles (rusting now sadly) that i've seen in my hometown. But since it was really interesting, really wanted to hear what all you esteemed members have to say about it.

I saw a couple of Minneapolis Moline Tractors that were imported i guess during the Nawab's time and a few Dodge and Chevy buses (which were in use till a few years back).

I clicked some pics of them too, will have to search for them. But is anyone having any info if there are any more of these Tractors anywhere in India or is it just the Nawabs of my hometown who imported it?
We do have a few classics and vintage stuff here.

Thanks

You seem to be right as it definitely isn't TMB (the bus at the rear is) not does it look like an Ashok Leyland Comet. The Comet grill was similar but had fewer slats. There is a logo visible above the grill but it's not clear. So it's either PAL Dodge/Fargo or HM Bedford. CVs from both these brands failed in the market due to serious quality and reliability issues. STUs stopped buying them by 1970 or so and shifted completely to Ashok Leyland and Tata products.
