A few Wankel engined Mazdas did show up in India, and most of them have had a heart transplant. I wonder if any rotary engined Mazda is on the road in India.

We are all aware of the 1951 Hillmen, never really thought whether they were imported or assembled in India. I don't even remember a discussion on that. I was very surprised when I came across this, Hillmen were assembled by API in Bhandup!!

New revelations keep cropping up

Cheers harit

Interesting. I always assumed that Dadajee Dhackjee were the assemblers in India. If API were the assemblers, then were Dadajee Dhackjee only into distribution? Or were there multiple assemblers and dealers for the Rootes Group in India?

On a related note, this 1948 Hillman Minx brochure lists the regional contact for the Rootes Group for the India, Pakistan and Ceylon region to be situated at "71, Park Street, Calcutta, India". Any idea which Indian firm this was?

Actually Amol as you are aware, the bike/scooter prices are skyrocketing and the appreciation is more marked than four wheelers. It is hassle free for speculators to own a two wheeler and keep it parked in a corner, keeping a vigil on the price front. I believe, this is playing havoc with the sentiments of true-blue enthusiasts who are caught between the speculators, ballooning prices and their desire to own good vintages.
As far as the car prices are concerned, during the past decade these have at least appreciated by three to four times. This is only a conservative estimate.
Back to the topic, here is an advertisement I found on the eBay site:

deutscheafrikar has done it again! He was kind enough to share the following excerpt from the 02-Jan-1932 edition of TheChaka (Bulletin of the non-Wankel Rotary Club of Calcutta). As per the advert Walfords were the Hillman dealers in Calcutta.

The Classic Advertisement/Brochure Thread-chaka.jpg

As seen at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheChaka/message/232

Further quoting deutscheafrikar :
Quote:
There seems to be a Walford Transport, Ltd, Automobile Engineers and Transport Agents—71;73 Park Street. Phone, P. K. 1620; Service Station and Stores, 117-119 Park Street. Phone, P.K. 492.
Storage; Hide Road, Kidderpore. Phone, South 559.
Petrol Depot and Breakdown Lorry; 46/1A Chowringhee. Phone, P.K. 1120.

and also
In about 1924, Walford & Co. introduced a regular bus service into Calcutta, their lead being followed shortly after by the Tramways Company and gradually by others
So we have Dadajee Dhackjee and API in Bombay, Walfords in Calcutta.
Were there any Rootes dealers in South India?

There must have been. But API were basically manufacturers / assemblers, not dealers. Again, as far as I know.

Just to add, Walford Transport Ltd were also authorized dealers of Willys vehicles. At 71 Park Street now stands a swank office building called "Park Plaza". It houses the office of one of my ex-employers, and I worked in this very building for a few years.

re: The Classic Advertisement/Brochure Thread

Wonderful thread to say the least, brings back good old memories of 80's. Will check at my native place for old RD's and post some over a period of time.
Did search on youtube, there are quite a lot of video advertisements not too sure if they can be posted here

An older Hillman Minx 4- Door Saloon (as it was called) advertisement from 1947 for India.

The Classic Advertisement/Brochure Thread-picture-287.jpg

These could have been direct imports then (CBU). Only later on the API link might have come after this company started assembling CKD kits from the Rootes Group.

re: The Classic Advertisement/Brochure Thread

Mods please move this post in case it is deemed to be off topic-

I just stumbled across an old advertisement for berliet truck, this ad was published in 'The Hindu' paper and was recently found bag of letters which was lost in the french alps some 46 years ago in an Air India flight crash.
To view the crumpled paper and the advertisement , click on the link below

http://www.thehindu.com/news/article...?homepage=true

I had never heard of this brand earlier and some googling led to a very interesting site dedicated for the brand.
