Yes now that you mention I do remember seeing a RR at a petrol pump during one of our trips through Pune to Bombay. Was it ever blue? As I vaguely remember the car to be blue. I could be wrong though. That same trip I had seen a limousine Chrysler New Yorker in a mill compound too

It appears like someone tried to shift the car using a crane and ended up ruining the roof? is this one of the two cars with the Vohra's as mentioned by you?

All 4 landed in Indore.Cheers harit

I was in Sri Lanka recently and saw this Rolls in a Monastery. Was not able up and close to it and neither was I able to gather more information as the Monks were not around.

Cheers

According to my records this is Twenty GXL70, later rebodied as a landaulette, originally an H J Mulliner Weymann fabric saloon. I last knew it in the UK. Steve

re: Classic Rolls Royces in India

So, apparently you can import a vintage car into Sri Lanka. If that assumption is not correct, atleast a monastry can import one. If a similar law would be applied in India, my house will be my temple
But seriously, why are we still making it difficult to import vintage cars and their parts?

Cheers harit

The Monastery has not imported it Some local person donated it Harit.

During my recent travels, I saw a lot of 40-50s English cars for sale, most of them lying with second hand car dealers. According to my local driver one is allowed to import refurbished cars in to Sri Lanka. But these car I saw were not recent imports.

Colombo has a vintage car club too which is doing well and active.

Cheers

Thanks Wasif. We discussed this car a few months back. No idea which the Maharaja in Orissa was (Parlikamedi ? - he was a R-R enthusiast)

Further to comments elsewhere on this forum, there is some doubt as to the legality of how GXL70 was imported to Sri Lanka. But it's best not to dwell on that subject -nudge, nudge, wink, wink!

GXL70 (a 20 hp with vertical radiator shutters), which arrived in Colombo last year, is believed to have been on display for a while at the Gangaramaya Buddhist temple beside the Beira Lake on the fringe of the Colombo CBD. But latest reports suggest that it is no longer there, and its current whereabouts are not known.

Over the past several years the temple's high-profile chief monk has amassed a modest collection of vintage and classic cars which he keeps in a motor museum of sorts at the temple. Below is another photo of GXL70, believed to have been 'snapped' at the Gangaramaya not long ago.

Also late last year, a private individual in Colombo, whose identity is unconfirmed, imported from the USA 1933 20/25 hp GLZ78, a Barker landaulette (with original UK registration ALB 915). The current whereabouts of GLZ78 in Colombo have been hinted at to this forumite, but cannot be confirmed.

Interesting "India" Rolls Royce Painting

Here is a whimsical one by Brian Sanders. Not sure if this is a real "India" car.

Gwalior RR SG "Pearl of the East"

R-R Silver Ghost Chassis # 60576 "Pearl of the East" shown during The Western India Motor Trials in 1907/08. Incidentally, this was also the first R-R to come to India (brought by Frank Norbury)

Interesting to note that the detachable top is off; and the twin spares behind the front seats, in addition to two on the side.

This car was bought after the Trials by the Scindia of Gwalior and most pictures of this car are with the detachable top in place

This would in most probably be the Calcutta Limo that was with the owner of the gas station in Khairtabad.

It came to Hyderabad in the early to mid nineties was silver in color !

I too would love to see current pictures of it !

"Pearl of the East" has unfortunately been lost, apparently no one knows what has happened to that car. I also had somewhere this picture, could not find it. This is a milestone Ghost, someday someone will build a replica.
The heading in one picture says "The Motor Union of Western Indis", what was this organisation? Was this the predecessor to WIAA?

That Hyderabad Ghost was being offered for sale a while ago, unfortunately the car is not working. Seems to have the aluminium problem, head made of aluminium and corroded.

Cheers harit
