re: Classic Rolls Royces in India

Here is a nice mystery after a long time.

A four door cabriolet with a distinctive rear end is seen in this 1961 Tamil movie Nichaya Thamboolam

Many detailed views of the car are seen in the first few minutes of the movie. At some point I think I can see a WBJ registration, though not sure. Can the experts identify the car?

Superb find Karl! I don't have a clue. For a moment I though it was the BHU car (21YC), but many features do not match!!!!

Registration looks like WBJ-2448

Thanks, though it wasn't my find.

I thought it could also be the Nandgaon car 50XJ but again too many differences. The sloping rear end should be easiest to identify.

I managed to catch the regn for a split second, the number is 2946, probably WBJ.

re: Classic Rolls Royces in India

I have the feeling that it's an older chassis with a later body, could it be the Hooper Tourer body that came off #3XJ ?

Hey Karl,

Thank a lot ! That was great. Did enjoy seeing the car but above all did enjoy seeing the movie also. These movies are old time classics, which you rarely get to see just like our old classic cars.

Thank you once again!

3XJ was a Darbhanga car - do you have images of the older and newer bodies? Does the car survive?

I have no picture of the Hooper Tourer body, but the later Thrupp & Maberly allweather body can be seen on Klaus-Josef Rossfeldt's site: http://archives.rroc.org/zenphoto/in...ntom%20II/3XJ/

What a lovely car. I see the regn plate reads BRR 100 - wonder if they made an effort to retain the original plate. BRR 100 would be period correct for a Darbhanga car.

The car is currently owned by an American gentleman and as far as I know it's registered DS8794.

From the same link I was going through some more Indian cars, and particularly noticed #104SK, a 1934 Phantom II. I have it listed as originally being a Kellner Landaulette, bring later fitted with the Hooper Tourer coachwork we see now.

Note the PANNA 7 plate at the rear. Is this a known state that owned the car later? And I wonder about the mascot and badge upfront - both seem more likely to be later creations.

A regular visitor to the RREC Annual Rally, also this year.
So it's now clear that #104SK has the Hooper body that came off #3XJ.

Yes, the current body on 104SK did come off 3XJ. While it was on 3XJ, it was all polished aluminium, with a blue interior.

The original Kellner body on 104SK has been posted before - while on display at the Paris Salon and during the Gaekwad's Golden Jubilee (both shown below).

Very pretty Lalique Chrysis on the scuttle of #104SK, very daring in those days I would guess...

re: Classic Rolls Royces in India

An interesting R-R "ambulance car" from a 1914 magazine article. The location reads like Dehra Doon.

Interesting "attendant seat" on the running board too.
