Re: Classic Rolls Royces in India

First owner of #179GY (by Freestone & Webb not Barker) was Lt.-Cmdr. Glen Kidston (of Bentley Boy fame) who took delivery of the car in november 1930, trading in his damaged Phantom II #123WJ.
He was killed in a plane crash 6 months later, so the car was probably up for sale soon after that and found it's way to India.

Thanks boybentley!

179GY went from Lt.Cdr Kidston to Nepal (1931) to Balrampur (1933) to Tirwa (1964).

I have a number of older pics of Raja Saheb Tirwa's RR, also an identical photo but a different or better condition print. Sharing them here, I still have more when the car took part in a rally. One photo is colored. Sadly the car is not maintained these days.

Cheers harit

Harit, many thanks for the lovely photos.

It has been suggested that after the accident boybentley mentioned, the body from 123WJ was transferred to 179GY.

Below is a picture of Mrs. Glen Kidston with what should be 123WJ.

It does indeed look very similar to the Tirwa car.

I am informed that a local mechanic disassembled the Tirwa PII for "maintenance" and could not put it together again. It disassembled but intact in the Tirwa premises.

Best wishes,

I think GC2137 is 83WJ, a Thrupp & Maberly limousine de ville.

And, 123WJ was returned to RR by Glen Kidson and in March 1931 sold to Mrs Rich, having been renumbered 134WJEX

Thank you Steve. One more "unknown" solved!

Yes, in the USA since at least July 1973, and with the same owner since 1999, I believe. I last corresponded with the owner in 2009.

80FH as it was in 1965 / 1966. I am not aware of any owners in Pakistan. It was probably exported through Pakistan.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

F. Denney Scott owned it at one point. His obituary also states that he acquired it in Lahore.

As it is currently (in France ?)

80FH was originally a Nandgaon car. It is known that in the 1930's or 40's, it was photographed with the Mitter family's 17EX (refer Gautam Sen's book on 17EX).

I believe it is currently in France. Hope this helps.

Re: Classic Rolls Royces in India

Thank you for the pictures, the first one is with a Lahore registration, probably 1955 or later.
There must have been owners in Pakistan besides Denny Scott. His Bentley R type had arrived in 1954 and he was posted in Peshawar at the time. 80 FH was never with him at the time and he left Pakistan in 1956, selling the Bentley in Peshawar.
80 FH was probably sold by Denny Scott around 1952 or so. The big question now is to whom? and when did it get out of Pakistan.

Just heard from someone last month about 80 FH so wanted to confirm and get some more background/history on the car.

Thanks again for the pictures, and yes it is Nandgaon!

Just when we think we have seen them all, there pops another garage find!

RR Silver Wraith, Chassis WTA23 by Park Ward. 1st owner, the impossibly beautiful Princess Niloufer of Hyderabad.

Her husband Moazzam Jah had an identical car, WVA60, now in the Bhogilal collection.

Prem, according to Tom Clarke, this is WVA42 which was bought new by Krishna Chandra Gajapathi Narayana Deo, Raja of Parlakimedi. The give-away detail is the division, found on design 20, otherwise identical to design 13.
