The white car that we see front on, in the 2nd photo is 2560 by Dykes.

There is a good chance that the car is GLN34, a Weymann Saloon 20; delivered new to Morarji Khatau (this picture is taken outside Morarji Cottage).

Is there anyway to find out roughly when the X-8400 plate would have been issued ?

We have seen X-7998 on a PII; and Y-2019 on a PI. Did "Y" come before "X" ?

Looking at those bulbous fenders we can be quite sure it was rebodied!

I have some dates as under

K 4xxx - 1939
K 5xxx - 1939
K 6xxx - 1940

N 1xxx - 1937

W 1xxx - 1929
W 5xxx - 1932
W 9xxx - 1937

X 6xxx - 1929

Y 5xxx - 1927
Y 6xxx - 1928
Y 9xxx - 1928

Z 8xxx - 1924

So as you can see now it is more confusing than ever before

Is this car a P3 ? and going by the colour of the steering not the normal coach builders I Presume . Surely being one of the prominent families in Mumbai a Rolls would be possible to own.

Two Morarji's or Morarjee's were Mill owners - One part is now known as the Piramal Group and the Morarjee family still deal in Cotton Textiles across India.

The Cottage, Morarji Cottage could give some clue to it's identity.
Was any Rolls supplied to a Morarji family / mills early 1930's?
This appears to be a discovery of a car not much is known about.

From what I have, the issuing order was: no letter, Z, Y, X, W, T, N, K and W9999 is said to be a 1934 number that was a reregistration from one of the first 2 series. I think the reregistrations started in 1933 or 1934 but how long it took to do all the no letter and Z vehicles I have no idea.

I have cars of 1938 and 1939, with the first books of registration showing the old, single alphabet followed by numbers. one starts with Y and the other I forget, need to look.

Therefore, at least in Bombay, the re regstration process must have started post those years.

It would certainly be useful to know what the dates of registration and registrations were for those two as it would help work out the dates better.
As we know now, Y was never reregistered, only the no letter and Z series.

Incidentally W 9999 was a 1932 Plymouth. In a photo dated Jan 1935 the same car is also seen with the plate BOM Z 9999. I assume BOM Z was changed at some point to W. And eventually around 1939 to BMW. It adds up since the Motor Vehicles Act was passed/updated in 1939 I think.
