As we know now, Y was never reregistered, only the no letter and Z series.

Hi all,
In 1939 a new Motor Vehicle Act was introduced by the Government of India. All vehicles were compulsory re-registered and this was done in 1939 and in 1940. In all the original registration documents the original number was mentioned on the opening page on top. When a duplicate registration book was issued, in most cases this number was not put again.
Please note that all Bombay state numbers were re-registered at that time, and the new series were assigned with area specific registrations. So Bombay stated with BMW, Ahmedabad got BYA, Pune had BYF but I am not sure if that was the first series, Nagpur had BYJ.
Re-registration occurred in 1939 and 1940 for sure.

Cheers harit

Re: Classic Rolls Royces in India

Hi,
Has anybody got any info on an ex-Dewas Rolls Royce. I don’t have any more details of the car. Sanghis has bought it somewhere in the late 80s or early 90s and later believed to have sold it. Any pictures or location info?
Thanks

Very nice year of manufacture? Did it ever come to India, and is it known to survive?

I have 3 more cars listed to Sir Bomanji, all Phantom 1 - 45EH and 52EH, a Hooper Landaulette and Limousine respectively, besides 113LG Barker Limousine. I do not have current whereabouts of these 3 as well.

41SG is a 1922 car.
It is very likely that it was only used in England. Not known if it is a survivor.

113LG is the Wankaner Silver Ghost, still owned by the family.

The Bomanji Phanotm I was 113L-C

Bomanji also owned Silver Ghost 24EE, a William Cole saloon.

Absolutely right, apologies for the slippery fingers.

Thanks! Did this come to India at any point?

And did they have any other notable cars, outside of RR?

Re: Classic Rolls Royces in India

A friend shared these gems today, from back issues of the RREC bulletins

This is really interesting, Silver Ghost #50PE - with a locally built body by 'Bithal and Nago of Hazaribagh' - I wonder if that was just a workshop/dealer plate, or the actual coachbuilder itself. The body does look locally built no doubt.

121GY that we know better from 'Queenie'

Phantom III in action! Perhaps 3AX201? Seems to bear some civilian registration though, so I'm not sure.

Edit - I see that 3AZ198 bore registration 1757 D at some point, perhaps this is it?

Thanks for the lovely pictures, Karl.

50PE seems to have had a Watson William (?) Limousine body originally. First owner was a F.W.Hunt.

Some more from the RREC archives

This is probably 2039, Noornihar, 1912 Barker Tourer of Patiala.

Re: Classic Rolls Royces in India

Here is a very interesting piece on the Geedee museum car, GH7.

Classic Rolls Royces in India-03.jpg

While it states the car was lost, it was infact dismantled and stored, and happily enough has been restored (with a Tourer body) and kept on display in the museum.

Re: Classic Rolls Royces in India

Came across a local magazine similar to Readers Digest called Kadambini. In their April 1971 issue they carried an article on Rolls Royce. There is just one picture of a car, the car registration number is DLB 4860.
I am attaching all the pages of the article and suspect that the article is just a story on Mr. Rolls, Mr. Royce and the cars manufactured by them. Someone could go through the article and tell us what is the content.

I have DLB 4860 as a 1912 Silver Ghost number 2090, Croall Tourer, probably rebodied at some point. I don't think it was delivered new to India. The gurus can enlighten.

This is probably the oldest RR in India?
