Wraiths in India

(From Roger OZ's response to karlosdeville)
"To the best of my knowledge, only one Wraith was delivered new to India, WLB25, a Park Ward limousine...I may stand corrected on this point."

Well, the best of my knowledge was NOT the best after all, and I do indeed stand corrected.

I have since learned that there was also WXA37, the 1938 Park Ward saloon delivered new to Baroda. Evidently this is the car, now owned by Jamshedji, that is depicted on page 263 of the Barwani book

Now, pardon me while I put on my suit of sackcloth and munch on a mouthful of ashes!

Of all the RR's I've seen till date the Gurney Nutting four door convertible remains the prettiest in my view. Having seen one other in dark green I am totally floored by its proportions. The Jodhpur coupe somehow didn't have the impact these beauties did.

These cars are like an exquisitely finished piece of jewellery. Stunning!

BTW BRG 1 looks very drab now in cream. That maroon must've looked fab

Here we go. I took these photos in 2006 at a rally in Bombay. The car looked beautifully preserved, rather than restored. I recall the car has been in long term ownership, and this very car was used as a test vehicle when new in Autocar magazine, or something like that.

It would help if you could post more details as in chassis numbers, coachbuilder etc. to make your post more meaningful. We have a PIII historian in our midst and he will corroborate much for you.

i do realise that but unfortunately this is only from memory and seeing old pictures and not from a document. hence the limited information. i could have missed a few also. these cars do not stand at one place or in one city so tracking them down is also an issue. few are put into the museum so they cannot be fiddled with to get the coachbuilder and chassis numbers. i am trying to see if there is a record of this with the owner.

Speedy, I do believe you are our best bet in getting more details on Bhogilal's cars. Please do explore all possibilities of getting pictures and details. I'm sure many would appreciate that of you.

BTW A bit OT but does Bhogilal have a Merc 500K (or 540?) in his collection?

i would surely love to share the information with everyone here. i have plenty of pictures of all the cars but none have been scanned so they are hard copies. i am getting them scanned so that i may upload them, they are over 200 pictures hence the delay. the details i am trying for, the person who used to have them has long expired and now there location is unknown. we r trying to make a new record and when that happens i would be able to share it.

Yes he does own a 1928 Mercedes 500k. there is a 540k with another collector in Bombay.

Im told he had one, bought from Bombay. It had a diesel fitted in it, but the original was supplied with the car and refitted, so Im told. I dont think the car has ever been shown though.

I vaguely recall it to look similar to the Bahawalpur car. Not sure though, saw the rear of the car.

Steve we are waiting for the next car "off tests" Love the way you so methodically state the history of each car.

WXA 37 - in 'The Autocar' and India

"I took these photos in 2006 at a rally in Bombay. I recall the car (WXA37)...was used as a test vehicle when new in Autocar magazine, or something like that."

Hello again, karlosdeville.

Thanks for the lovely pics of a lovely car.

You are right - according to Tom C. Clarke's definitive work 'The Rolls-Royce Wraith', WXA37 was the subject of a road test report in 'The Autocar' magazine of September 22, 1939. Tom has reprinted the entire article in his book, and there are photos of WXA37 'wearing' its British registration number EYX 362.

For anyone who is not familiar with this book, it is worthwhile getting hold of a copy to learn just about all there is to learn about the pre-war '25/30 hp Wraith' - as this model is described in official Rolls-Royce company literature also reproduced in Tom's book.

Awini pointed out a interesting detail on this car. He thinks the bumpers are probably reversed. The front should be placed upside down and put on the rear. It has the cut for the number plate box.

Here are some of the Bhogilal Rollers on display. The other stalawrts around will have to identify them for us though.

Many cars are of course repeats, but I figure these larger more detailed photos would be welcome.
