I own a 1933 Phantom II Continental by J Gurney Nutting and the build sheet lists 'Connecting up Savigear'. My question is who or what is Savigear? I have asked on the RROC, RREC and RROCA sites but no-one knows. Since so many Rolls-Royce cars went to India, I am hoping someone on the forum may know the answer.
Kind regards,

I have now been advised that Svigear is the company that did the final wiring up of the electrical when the coachbuilders were finished. Maybe the mystery is solved?
Regards,
Brian

The Maharaja Sir Bhupinder Singh of Patalia's Silver Ghost

Here are pictures of the Maharaja of Patiala's 1912 Silver Ghost. it is Chassis 1958, an underslung London to Edinburg model with a London to Edinburg style body by Holmes of Derby.

The car was shipped to India in 1913 and used as a factory demonstrator which was subsequently purchased by the Maharaja.

He seems to have kept it for just three years as it is reported to have been exported to Australia in 1916.

It was refurbished and modernised in the mid twenties with a new top and slatted radiator grill.

The car subsequently went through around 19 owners and was restored in 1984 to close to what it was when new.

The first few pictures are of the car when new, followed by some showing its modernised refurbishment and the last few are of it as it is now after its restoration by P & A wood of UK.

The car survives in New South Wales,Australia.

Just a little update: Actually, this chassis has been owned since 1999 by Sir Michael Kadoorie (owner of the Peninsula Hotels in Hong Kong, Tokyo etc..). It is kept in England and it went to Pebble Beach last year. Of course, it has been restored to concours condition. Its new (4th) body is by Steve Penny who made an exact replica of the original Holmes of Derby tourer. The period painting in pastel colors shows R.D. Spinney of the RR London showrooms at the wheel. Subsequently it was used in India as a demonstrator by G.C. Gnapp.

The Maharaja of Barodas Phantom I 1927.

Previously owned by the Maharaja and Maharani of Baroda, India. This one off concours superb example is a work of art that can be enjoyably driven. This car was built by Rolls Royce and bodied by Aurthur Mulliner in 1927 and is a very historically important vehicle. Custom original features included 24 carat gold plated interior fittings and sterling silver exterior door handles. The rear compartment is fitted with a central swivel throne chair with two fold-away seats, a cocktail cabinet, sliding curved glass division, ornate burl walnut with inlaid brass and Royal Purple English silk to the original pattern and color, adorned with gold, and Connally leather to the front. Mechanically excellent w/almost little wear from new on this 7,668 cc six-cylinder engine and four-speed transmission.Very low miles since completion of an extensive cosmetic restoration on this very very low mileage original. Call Roy for further information.

Car is for sale at Classic cars for sale - European, American antique and Vintage automobiles. Pictures from their website.

Maharani Chimnabai may have used the car. Rest assured her persona more than outshone the Rolls Royce. She was a woman ahead of her times. She was Maharani Gayatri Devi's grandma

The treatment of the under grille are on this Rolls is very similar to the cars in the Bhawalpur collection that were auctioned recently.

Can anyone elaborate on this feature ?
