Re: Daimlers in India

Magnificent 1936 Daimler of Taj Villa, Bombay. This car was brought in for King George coronation then sold to an Englishman from whom the present owners bought it. Fabulous villa too. Photo courtesy Mr Zahid Saeed grandson of the gentleman, owner of Taj villa, who bought the Daimler. Car should be familiar sight in vintage car circles .

I stay very close to this magnificent bungalow, and while the Daimler is a sight for sore eyes, the bungalow is simply astounding! And always immaculately white right through the year.

I think the Daimler also made an appearance in Attenborough's Gandhi, and has been attending events for ages. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Daimlers in India

In the 1940s you could buy your new Daimler from the quaintly named Triangular Motors in Bombay

Re: Daimlers in India

Hello Denis,

The Daimler in Lucknow is with me.

In the recent past my visit to the forum have been infrequent.

It would be nice if we could interact - while we restored the cars.

The restoration process here differs quite a bit from the UK.

Thanks for getting in touch

I have just noticed this posting - it's only taken me nearly seven years!

Anyway, to belatedly answer the question, Daimler did not make bodies for this model. As with nearly all their cars of this period, bodies were provided by outside coachbuilders who would construct a body to the owner's requirements. Therefore, the colour also was chosen by the owner.

This particular phaeton style body was constructed in 1988 and the cream colour was chosen as a contrast to the more usual (and to my eyes, drearily sombre) black. However, Daimler did supply the chassis and subframe in black as the standard finish.

The book mentioned in my earlier post was published but proved unexpectedly popular so now, sadly, is out of print.

Here are two Daimlers which from the same period and sport sleeve valve engines

The 1920 Daimler 6-30 Barker Limousine de Ville, originally owned by Dhanrajgir of Hyderabad. The car is currently in Delhi and was restored by Julian.

Some nostalgia pictures from the Statesman Rally, Delhi in the 1990's

Re: Daimlers in India

Here is another royal Daimler DB18, with a rare body style. It is a 4 door drop head. Not to be confused with a drop head coupe, which were more common.

From the colour combination, colour of the lights and that it is a Daimler, we may speculate this to be a Nawanagar car.

These pictures were taken in the 90's at Bangalore.

The colour combo and lights are distinct

Note that this is rare 4 door drop head. Probably a zenana car as the rear glass is blackened

Rear is not as spectacular as the front
