This BL series was Bengal, before it became West Bengal and the regns changed from BLX to WBX, with the numbers remaining the same. In the 80s Bombay also issued the BL series, but long after the previous series was canceled in West Bengal.

Gawwd ! You know something guys, my first car was an 800 - BLB 2032, bought second hand from Dorab Panday from Dadar parsi colony.
When I had this car, someone I knew, asked me whether it was from West Bengal, and boy, how I ridiculed him ! Thanks for enlightening me Karl guruji, I realized my mistake !!

Karl,

Are you saying that all BLB registrations were from bengal??
I feel like years ago a very large number of cars in bombay had "BLB" numberplates - does this apply for all of them?

Like I said, BL_ series (including BLB) was originally issued in Bengal (from what I have come to recently understand by looking at various old pics - no confirmation). After the borders were redrawn and West bengal came into existence, the regns changed. For example, BLA 7266 became WBA 7266, BLB 5773 became WBB 5773. Bombay also issued BL_ series in the 80s, but that was well after the Bengal registrations were cancelled, so there would be no overlap. It is the only such case I have noticed.

I guess this is possible. In Kerala, before we had the KLT, KLK,KLC etc series, we had Travancore state regns TCT, and TCK(I think).
All these cars were re registered into the newer series when they came into existence, in the 50's.

great automobile race from Delhi to Bombay

found in The Commerce Journal of Commerce, Texas, 13th January 1905:

India is to have a great automobile race at the end of this month. The course is from Delhi to Bombay, a distance of about 900 miles, and is under the auspices of the Motor Union of Western India. The Maharajah Galkwar of Baroda offers a splendid cup to the winner, and the Rajah of Kapurthaia and other princes are among the prize givers. One of the rules is that the speed shall at no time during the race exceed thirty miles an hour.

Does anyone know any more about this event?
