Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

Awesome Harit relieved to know its in good hands. I knew this was some known car. Yes now i remember seeing it parked where you have photographed it. This also featured in the Film Jewel Thief and a few other films. I just remember the number clearly, not so much the film.

This is a Chevrolet Deluxe, which is the first car bought by Lata Mangeshkar. It is featured in a supplement on the Chevrolet brand (history of the brand in India) in Autocar India sometime around 2004 / 05. It also featured Chevrolets owned by celebrities wherein this car is featured. Haritji's Chevrolet Belair that was in a very good condition then (which was featured in many films) is also featured here.
A picture of Smt and Shri Jaani Rajkumar (Pandit) with his Belair had appeared in this supplement. Raj Kumar was very fond of this car that was with him for a long, long time.
I will soon post more pictures from this supplement.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

This one from Khel Khel Mein is too melodious a song. Asha and Pancham are the singers to the tune set by Pancham himself. Gulshan Bawra has written the song. Aruna Irani and Rakesh Roshan are featured here.
Towards the end, in the last "antara" of the song, when Asha croons "mujhe ek sundar si gaadi me le gaya aur bola, "jaani yeh tere liye hain"_ _ _ _ ". The car featured here is a Chevrolet Camaro convertible which appears for about a minute or so.

A few classics seen in the song 'Ek rasta do rahee' from the movie 'Ram Balram' (1980)- the car that 'stars' in this song is the 3-wheeled SAIL Badal.
I reckon this location is somewhere in Goa?

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

A nice late 40s Buick 8 convertible seen being towed by this WIAA tow-truck throughout this song:

Any idea what make the truck is? One of the old Nissan 4 D(?), ex-Army? Look quite crudely made.

I didnt know the AAs had tow-trucks available back then!

The way the Buick swings when Shammi dances about in it is worth watching!

An MG TC is also briefly seen.

Stanher
Hi
Good of you to put up the pictures.
As far as I remember WIAA always had a towing service.
The towing truck seems to be a power wagon. Is that a Dodge?
What model does that look like?would be mid fifties?
Regards

I never saw the picturisation of this song ,though may have heard it a few hundred times. Soothing and ballad like notes written by Shailendra and set to tune by by Shankar Jaikishan. But I can't believe that Shammiji was so ebullient and chirpy during the picturisation ! Budtameez was released in 1966.
Yes, thats a Dodge Power Wagon of the WIAA. The Power Wagon's were imported for military use in the 1940's and 50's and were used by the Defence Forces till the 1960's. These with the Willys jeeps and Ford / Chevrolet Canada 1.5 ton and 5 ton trucks (all imports) were the mainstay of our armed forces in the early days.
The first Nissan 1.5 tonner mini-truck, Nissan Jonga Patrol MUV and Shaktiman trucks (collaboration with MAN of Germany) rolled off the Jabalpur assembly line of the Vehicle Factory in 1967 or so.
This one is from the Defence disposal, auction etc. Its number plate reads BMC number, which if true dates it back to the late 1950's. So it must have served the forces and got auctioned by the late 1950's to land in civilian use.
In fact, Shammi Kapoor owned a Buick Super convertible (BMU 3009). It was bought by him second hand and he kept it with him till the very end.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

Here is a 1.23 minute video on a charity programme organised by Raj Kapoor in 1970. The video shows the then President V.V. Giri and the then Admirals arriving in their cars a Chevrolet and a Dodge Kingsway respectively.

Incidentally, tomorrow is the 41st death anniverasy of the Late Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal of the famous music director duo Shankar Jaikishan
