Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

The song "yeh lo main haari piya, huin teri jeet re..." from aar Paar (1954) by Geeta Dutt with music by O.P. Nayyar can be seen on the video here. The actors are Shyama and Guru Dutt . Guru Dutt is driving a Chevrolet Fleetmaster taxi through the streets of Bombay. At times, when the traffic is shown we see some more taxis and a few private cars too.

During those times Bombay used to have a two tier taxi fare system (small and full size) and the meter would be calibrated accordingly. The Morris Minor, Hillman Minx, Ford Prefect and other such cars would fall in the small car category, while nearly all the American ones would fall the full size category.

The song is from Taxi Driver (1954). Dev Anand and Johnny Walker alongwith others go for a joy ride. The song is a treat to watch and listen in to.

A nice Desoto convertible and a Volvo Amazon from a 1969 movie JIGRI DOST. Note the Fiat 1100D with the metal (SS maybe) 'eyelids' over the headlamp lenses! More common was the painting the top half of the lenses black.
Not many cars to be seen in this movie otherwise though!

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

Here's an old song with a beautiful scene. The bullock cart pulls the convertible (LHD) with hero Surendra at the wheel. Is it a Ford Deluxe Convertible ? Naseem Banu the heroine is atop the bullock cart. The song's title is "Kyon unhe dil diya, haaye yeh kya kiya" from the film Anokhi Ada (1948) by Mehboob Khan, with music by Naushad and lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni.
(Singers Surendra Nath and Shamshad Begum)
Among the earliest films to have a car filmed. The RK film Barsaat (`1949) (hawa mein udta jaaye) also shows a beautiful Oldsmobile 88 convertible, then owned by Raj Kapoor.

The picture of the 1946 Ford Super Deluxe Convertible, quite matches with the car seen on the video, I believe.

From the Guru Dutt film "Aar Paar", the song "Kabhi aar kabhi paar" by Shamshad Begum. Shyama and Guru Dutt are seen on the video with the car BMW 3609, that is fleetingly shown for a few seconds, only partly (quite typical of many Guru Dutt films). The last scene shows the car posterior in full, while it is being pushed. My guess is that it could be a Hillman Minx Phase I from the 1930's or early 1940's.

That's a nice find - but more interesting is the early Vespa in the frame, with 'cycle handle'.

I do not know about this car, but incidentally an identical car was offered to me for sale bearing regn number BMU 3536 I think, and offered to me as ex Dev Anand.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

Got the news from a very close relative of the late Shri Kishore Kumar, (1929-1987) that the Champion car (Ford Model "A" CPV 65) which was featured in the 1958 comedy flick, "Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi" has been disposed way back in the 1990's. The buyer is unknown. The car was dark blue in colour during its last days and was in a scrap condition, being parked in "Gauri Kunj" the KK residence on Juhu Tara Road.

Also I am told that the late Shri Kishore Kumar owned a Chevrolet Impala and a Chevrolet Nova, apart from some more cars. His most trusted man Friday, Mr Abduljee used to look after the cars. Unfortunately Mr Abduljee passed away a few years back.

I have a picture of the Champion car during its rotting years that appeared in The Ilustrated Weekly in the 1980's when Kishore Kumar was alive.

Mr Abduljee was indeed Kishore Kumar's Man Friday and confidante . To add further information, he was the driver, P.A., Finance Manager, think tank for finances, money matters - like fixing, hiking song recordings, shows, function rates / charges for the late Kishore Kumar.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

The Google Doodle of the day pays its tribute to the great actor too ! Our 81st birthday tributes and homage to actor Nutan, who was born today in 1936. She passed away at a relatively young age, owing to liver cirrhosis and cancer in 1991.
A very melodious song link for us here from the film Chhalia, (1960) starring Nutan and Raj Kapoor. In this song sung by Lata and chorus, (music by Kalyanji Anandji and lyrics by Qamar Jalalabadi) we see actor Rehman arriving at the end. To start with, a Packard Clipper is seen driven by Nutan with her friends in tow.
