Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

'Ek Gaadi Baki Anadi' 1988

This Marathi movie is a Herbie knock off, with a red Beetle that has a mind of its own.

A 1958 Chevy Impala convertible is also seen, that we also saw in 'Maine Pyaar Kiya' and 'Yaarana'

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

Naukri (1954)

This Kishore Kumar starrer has many scenes of Bombay traffic, with the usual plethora of Hillman, Ford and Vauxhall taxis besides regular Hindustans and American cars. A rare sighting is a mid sized 1930s Renault, and a Triumph Mayflower is seen at the end.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

Sonar Khancha (Bengali) 1973

Uttam Kumar is seen driving a strange convertible in this film. I think it was a choptop late 1940s Hudson with 1956 Dodge fins grafted on - we have seen atleast 2 more similar creations (though hardtop) originating from Calcutta, must have been a trend at the time. Also seen extensively is a 1956 Studebaker.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

Rajkumar (Bengali) 1970

A rather unique looking Vauxhall DHC is prominently seen in many scenes. Given the rather slibsided rear styling I initially thought it was a roadster conversion, but on looking up it appears to match this rare coachbuilt '14HP DX Light Six Tourer' by Whittingham and Mitchell. Wonder if it survives.

Also seen is this early 1940s American sedan, maybe a Chevy cut down?

Pichi Maruju (Telugu) 1976

A unique car is seen here, a VW Beetle based dune buggy.

Giving it company is a 1958 Chevy Impala convertible that we have seen many times before.

A 1938 Vauxhall that was bought new by the founder of AVM Studios, and still retained by the family. Read more about it here.

I have actually ridden in this car 30+ years ago in Goa. Have always wondered what it was. Belonged to a friend of my parents who was a film director, etc.

My now faint memory believes it was yellow (or perhaps green), and it had the tendency to back-fire loudly every so often.

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

From Vidhaata (1982)

Coimbatore airport is shown. The cars seen include a Studebaker Commander, Ambassador Mark 4 and a Volkswagen Squareback.

Dilip Kumar the Tragedy King seems to be scripting a tragedy for Amrish Puri with these dialogues:-

"Hawa mein udne waale jahaj bahut jhatke khate hain"

"Nariyal paani pe lete hain, dimag durust ho jaye"

And the Ambassador Mark 4 and soon after the Studebaker Commander are relegated to HISTORY !

"Bada aadmi banna ho to choti harkat mat karna"

Re: Old Bollywood & Indian Films : The Best Archives for Old Cars

A clipping from the comedy film "Chupke Chupke". A treat to watch their newly appointed driver Dharmendra who tests the endurance of a then new Premier President both in the reverse and forward gears. He undertakes some "minor" repairs and impresses the owner Om Prakash, who says that a day out in the workshop for the car would have cost him Rs 100/-. Cannot compare this with today's prices!
(pls watch the 5.55 - 7.40 minute slot in this clipping)
