1. Well that's another surprise. The indication on the right side of the Plate said 190 D but the numbers on the left side indicated that the car is a petrol.

2. Any way better sense, driven home by the learned lot of this forum, has prevailed. I have decided to walk away from all the cars. The Ponton is severly mutilated. The fintail will be very very costly to restore. The 114 however is a good car ( In my opinion), but the price quoted by him and the money required to bring it to concourse standard is out of my budget.

3. Meanwhile, I found a good 1962 WILLYS and bought it .

4. Thanks every one for giving the right inputs. Viva la team-bhp.

The "d" refers to the series, not the engine. As in 190 a, 190 b 190 c and so on. All diesel engines had an OM prefix...Oil Motor!!

The M180 was a very old Mercedes engine, it powered the 1952/3 220 Mercedes, the W 187. How that number is on this car (the 230/8) is anbody's guess.

The 230/8 was a W 114, six cylinder using I think the M 130 engine with twin Zenith INATs, introduced in 1968.
When the W115 Mercedes 220 4 cylinder was upgraded to 230, in 1973, there were 2 cars in the MB line up with 230 designation.

230.4 was the 4 cylinder and 230.6 was the 6 cylinder, both in production till the end of the 114/5 in1976.

1. Thanks I shall post the updates on the Willys soon on the relevant forum.

2. Alvis, The Heckflosse (first series), were manufactured under the following configurations (Source - wiki)

Chassis code Years Model Engine
W110.010 1961–1965 190c 1.9 L M121 I4
W110.110 1961–1965 190Dc 1.9 L OM621 Diesel I4

There are no petrol W110 with a suffix D, to my knowledge, therefore the D suffix for an original petrol engine is obviously incorrect.

3. The base plate of the engine indicated that it to be fitted with the 180.954, which is the 6 cylinder engine. I verified the engine again on the W114, it has an OM 616 engine (Seems original), and these were the stock fits on W115 240D. so the car is very very close to an original with no modifications alterations etc.

Yes my friend, you are correct, there was no "d" in the 190 series.

Hi Alvis,

Things are getting a little confusing for me because we are talking about two cars, the 190 Fintail and the W115.

I'm talking about the chassis plate for the 190 Fintail which shows 190 "D". The D does not denote the series and rarely has in Merc parlance other than 2 exceptions:

1) Pre-War Merc cabriolets came in several body styles. One such body style was referred to as the Cabriolet D, the D denoting the presence of a B pillar on a four door cabriolet body style. The Cabriolet B on the other hand did not have such a centre pillar.

2) The last of the Adenauer series was called the 300 D. This was truly a case of the D denoting the last of the series.

After this however, D has not denoted a series to the best of my knowledge; certainly not on Pontons and Fintails. The 4 cylinder Pontons had the following series: 180 (side valve engine carried over from the 170), 180 D (for diesel), 180A (M121 engine, same engine as 190 but less power), 180B (second of the M121 engined cars with the fatter bumpers and lower, broader grille), 180 dB (diesel with the fatter bumpers etc.), 180C (last of the 180 petrol series) and finally the 180 dC (last of the diesel 180 series).

For the 190 Pontons, there was just the 190, (which, even retrospectively, is not referred to as a 190A), 190 D (diesel), 190B (again fatter bumpers), 190 dB (diesel engined, fatter bumpers) and that was it. The 190 C was the first of the Fintail series and D only denoted diesel. It ended at C.

Subject to correction of course!

Re: Vintage & Classic Mercedes Benz Cars in India

Hi mbz,

I was refering to the W110, however it is confirmed that there was no "d" series in the 190 of the W110.
Seems the only car that made it to "d" was the 300, W186, 188, 189.
From what I seem to recall all the series alphabets were in small case.

All D for Diesel were Capital case, as were all alphabets for designations for cabriolets like A, B, C, D.

Did the chassis plate not mention the series like 180a, 180b etc?

Yes, chassis plates do mention the series in lower case as you have said. For instance, the chassis plate on my 180 a is stamped as such, the "a" being in lower case. You can see it in the attached pic of my car's chassis plate, on the top left corner. The "a" designation was to differentiate from the first series 180 cars which had the pre-war side valve engine.

The 190 on the other hand never had a side-valve variant so it started of as the 190 and then the second series was called the 190b.

Sweet car. but the body trim on the boot lid seems to have been very poorly hammer in place. I also have a feeling that the cars been repainted.

I would not have expected a 1969 car with such good paint finish.
Most important, but not mentioned, the rear strips have been screwed on, very bad.
The upholstry could definitely be cleaned much more, at the moment patches are still seen. An expert hand could do wonders.
Body line is very good, maybe the car has not been "tinkered". How I love that word

Cheers harit
