Vintage & Classic Mercedes Benz Cars in India

While we have two interesting threads on the K type and SLs in India here,

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/pre-19...ged-delhi.html

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/post-1...nz-190-sl.html

I feel a dedicated Mercedes thread is in order for all other models.

We start off with a very stylish and elegant design (especially for a small car), the Mercedes 170V roadster.

BYH 2115 in her earlier (more original) avtaar when she belonged to one Mr Mehta in Bombay. Front bumper appears to be some from the Chrysler Corp.

Here she is in Pune, 2004 after a restoration by Mogul. A lot of extra and unnessecary embellishments are seen, like the trims, taillights, "Special Roadster" badge, bumpers, wheel etc.

What surprised me even more was that the car was sold for an exorbitant sum to the Titus collection, and put on display in pretty much the same state at this years Auto Expo! Im told it is perhaps now resold.

WBG 9103, looking lovely in this shade, is part of the Jasdanwalla collection. Bumper guards look remarkably similar to Hillman Minx units, but are likely to be original.

Now he also had a similar white car, MMF 26 (seen here in 93), so I think it is the same car, with the original number reverted. I could be wrong.

Also GJY 6767 is reportedly an ex Bhavnagar car. Currently in Bombay. Bumpers and guards again appear non original.

This rather loud car is part of the Kadam collection.

A much older rally, perhaps early 90s, Bombay.

This car was owned by film actress Mumtaz before it landed up in Titus collection at Delhi. Believe someone named Irfan negotiated the deal. BYH 2115 is also seen in one of the Tata's film titled "Keepers of the Flames" where Kabir Bedi who is the narrator in this film is seen driving this vehicle at Juhu Helibase. I have a copy of this film if anyone is interested in watching it. Don't believe it has been resold again. As far as I know it is still in Titus Collection.

67Bug the car was bought by Irfan Mogul of toyato tech from Mumtaz. restored and owned by him. it has come for a few rallies too. later when he was in some trouble the car was sold to Titus by Jehangir. the car now stand in Titus's Garage and only for the exhibition the car stood in between Mr. Anands. cars. the plackard read Mr.Titus as the owner.

@ Karl Mpg 3065 is the same body style as mine and belonged to some one i know. this car was my reference car when we were restoring my 170v. the car was an ex Gwalior car and was bought by a fellow member's father. the car was sold to this gentleman. we had even restored this car.

that is the road adjecent to Inox bombay in the 90's. i think it was the only rally held there.

Saw WBG 9103 on East Street, Poona 10 days ago. She was parked in front of George's (is that still open?) and had a small crowd milling around with a couple of shutterbugs active too!

Ive also seen his 190SL and 54 Plymouth on the road recently, plus a friend of mine spotted his 57 Fiat 1100. Perhaps they are being readied for the 7th Sept rally in Pune.

George is very much open, business is booming. It has been recently renovated, but once you're in there it retains the old world charm. And if you are there at the right time, the food is still great. A must try is the caramel custard.

notice how most of the 170V's dont even have the correct hubcaps, Moguls (now titus) car doesnt even have the right steering (its a late ponton, fin type steering). Says a lot for about what state these 170Vs must have been aquired in originally.

Did you notice the original hubcaps were present in the first pic? Even steering wheel seems to be genuine. Sigh.

This picture of an early large(ish) Mercedes was sent to me by someone, I think it was Dave of VW fame.

This fintail was lying unused for a while, with the rear end sunk. It has since dissapeared.
