Haryana registrations HR and HY (with HN for Chandigarh) started in late 1966 from the information I have as Haryana was only created on 1.11.66. From the few photos I have seen, I think the serial letters were issued according to RTO and not vehicle class.
It makes it very hard to tell what the date could be.
Does anyone know which RTOs issued which letters?
Cheers

Re: Early registration numbers in India

This beauty of an image shows a Fiat 1100 probably in 1954 on Bombay's Marine Drive. The temporary plates show BMN 11/B, but more intriguing to me is the shape of the plate. Have we seen these before?

Early registration numbers in India-bmn.jpg

Fiat lover's will also notice the body coloured wheels - unusual.

And not to forget the absence of body trims on the front fender.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Karl,
A great find as these old ones were not so often photographed.
However, not a temporary plate I am afraid :-)
This is a dealer plate and would be white on red. The temporary plates were red on yellow and BMB. BMN is Bombay and 11 is the dealer number with B being the second plate he had. The same system exists pretty much today in some states. E.G. MRN 11/A to Z, AA-AZ, etc repeated over and over for each separate batch of complete Tata buses heading for export. They are stickers these days however.
Cheers

Re: Early registration numbers in India

The earliest personal one that I remember is my grandfather's Standard Herald http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triumph_Herald with the plate "KLK 6970",
I also have an ancient (about 60 years old) B/W picture of my mom standing in front of the family car which was an Austin.

Will upload the pics as soon as I find it and scan them.

I hope you do find a pic. atleast of this car! BTW, KLK 6970 would've been just a little after KLK 6513, which I've a pic. of- so your car must've a '64-65 Standard Herald mk1.

Do you recall what colour it was - Grey by any chance ? The number for some reason is familiar to me

Shyam, I think from Registration Number - its 1966 Model Car and probably a Mrak II, which were availble in Kerala from early 1966, as couple of my dad's friend had them (ours was Feb 1968).

Best Regards & Thanks

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Yup. It's a "blue" Mark II that my grandfather had after he retired.
My uncle used to have me on his lap and grab the steering wheel to drive and by age 9, I could drive an ambassador within the compound even though my legs would barely reach the pedals.

Attaching a picture (the plates are not exactly clearly visible) of the Herald where I am sitting with my younger brother and a neighbor/friend along with the Austin (my mom and aunt are in the frame)

P.S: team-bhp member Madan80 can vouch for the authenticity even though pics were taken was way before he was even born

The Holkar State had red + white number plates for the state garage. There was a notification for this, taken from an old copy of a gazette, paper has yellowed.

The railways had their stock numbered, but maybe not their railcars.

This photo shows BNR at the place where the registration would normally have been on a car, maybe Bengal Nagpur Railways.

On the back of the photo it says on the way to Wartair which lies in the North West Frontier Province, today in Pakistan. Seems they went way out on a joy ride!

Cheers harit

Harit, please scheck the spelling of the town mentioned.

It could be Waltair - which is the "English Man's" name for Vishakhapattinam or Vizag - which was and is one of the major junctions of South Eastern Railway.

South Eastern Railway - spawned from BNR or Bengal Nagpur Railway, which was the operating Company of the Central and Eastern India

If Its indeed a BNR Car then it would appear that they really did not go too way out for a joy ride

Best Regards & Drive Safe

Ram

CAQ - car and bike
CAS - car and bike
CAX - car and bike
