I believe the MYa series did not finish until 1973 finally. However, as is normal, my lists are not perfect (would show sad face smile but can't find).

We do! Do you not see the options while composing a post? Restrict to 2 smileys per post though please

I have BMN 1228 in my list, and according to my notes it was a part of a bike just visible in another photo, will take time to dig it up.

It gets confusing (well to me anyway) as we have this photo of MYS 6336 from somewhere on here that is said to be a 1920s bike. I guess thaat 1930s MYS covered the whole of Mysore. In 1939 they seem to have split up Mysore registrations and MYS was allocated to Shimoga only with MYM for Mysore and indeed there are another 9 suffix letters on the list.
If that is all correct, the reregistrations must have been chaos in 1939!
Cheers

There were probably two separate series of MYS - we have seen them in pictures dating to the 1930s, and again in cars of the 1950s and 60s.

MYS (all capitals) is Shimoga registration for cars and bikes in the 1950-60's

I am speculating that Mys (Only M is capital) could be Mysore State from the 1930's

But we see capital MYS as well in older pictures - for example the early bike that Cedric posted earlier. We continue digging.

Karl,
I think (after I enlarge the CC photo) that it is actually C.G.
CG was Coorg from whenever they started registrations there and CGA is the 1939 Coorg series.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

An almost new Fiat Select is seen here in Benaras, with a white/commercial plate. The UPL series remains common to passenger cars.

Early registration numbers in India-delhi-beetle-1961.jpg

The picture is from Delhi, 1961.

The Beetle looks like a foreign visitor or recent transfer. Where is it registered (QJ-395x)?

This car seems to have a chrome moulding to the roof water channel and continuing below the rear glass. Was that standard / optional ?

To answer my own question, it must have been........

Travancore,
I am certain that QJ is a British temporary plate of the period. It could be temporary import or an export plate. I doubt someone would have driven a Beetle from India to the UK, stayed a while and went back. So I guess it is an export plate.

Likely to be a Chevy from about 1941/42?

Travancore,
Indeed. It is the 4th Bombay series. All numbers, BOM, Z and then Y.
Nice picture.
