Slicvic,
Sorry I missed this post but better late than never I guess.
HNx is on my list as HN - Haryana (Chandigarh) 73-
I hope that helps.

On another matter I am seeking help please.
I had always believed that the PJx registrations were post partition Punjab and from what fairly limited photographic evidence I have, I thought the 3rd letter was issued by vehicle type not by registration office.
Some photos and newspaper cuttings have just come in from a long deceased American collector that show a private and a commercial PJL registration - the commercial PJL beeing photographed in "Azad Kashmir". So that means the 3rd letter is not by vehicle type!
The cuttings were all filed by him as Pakistan not as India.
So, do we think PJx was a 1939 series pre partition series or do we think PJL somehow ended up as Lahore in Pakistan while other PJx registrations were indeed India or has anybody some other idea?
All help gratefully received.
Cheers
Cedric
Attached are a few PJx series registrations for you.

Attached are a few PJx series registrations for you.
I too have very few PJx numbers, but it is also important to keep in mind that in Punjab you can transfer numbers, so often older numbers are reissued to newer cars. Here is what I have additional to your list
  • PJL 5 - Bajaj scooter
  • PJL 525 - Ambassador
  • PJO 3 - modern BMW 3 series
  • PJQ 742 - Late 1940s Ford appearing in a period movie
  • PJS 3 - 1955 Chevy Bel Air

This would explain that. Had seen a HNL xx on a Swift and a PAV x on a superbike

jsing,
Punjab and Bihar. I believe they could be but cannot be certain of the exact dates. I have them as finishing in 1973.
Pictures of BRT vehicles look more like early 50s to me. Both car and mc.
No pictures of PNW but PNU looks like it might be late 50s.

Cheers

Early registration numbers in India-austin-atlantic-pjl5275.jpg

Here is an Austin Atlantic with a PJL registration. Taken in Lahore. The lady I believe is Noor Jehan.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

travancore,
Many thanks for this. I am certain now that PJL is a Pakistan Lahore series from 1947 onwards. 2 more photos have come in from another plate man who has been searching for 1940s and 1950s Punjab photos and both were PJL registrations taken in Pakistan. I guess that India adopted the rest of the PJx series at about the same time.
Let me get some issues sorted out and I will load the photos I have in a few days.
Cheers
Cedric

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Travancore,
Seems I have another mystery here. I agree that the vehicle pictured is a much later one and I also have this photo that I found on the site here a while ago. Apart from an obviously very genuine TRB plate that is in a collection, these are the only TR photos I have.
I will have to add TR to the 1947 list and guess it ran all the way until the current system was introduced.

Anyone got any knowledge on Tripura registrations? A long shot I know but I have to ask.
Cheers
Cedric

If I remember right it was Kutch, you had shared this image of a Mercedes.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Harit,
Kutch indeed as Karlos says. I have it that it was a series that ran from the very earliest days through to 1956.
I believe that KHV 177 is probably a 1938ish Merc 170V

Cheers
