A Dealer / Temporary / Transit plate ?
Travancore,
I think it is probably a temporary plate rather than a dealer plate but since Delhi used different colours on plates from most other places, it is very confusing. I have one white on black 1911 photo of Delhi DD.120 5 which I am sure is a dealer plate and a probably red on white DK 01T 6 that I believe is a Delhi temporary and said to be 1931. This D111T 2 could well be red on white.
Cheers

Probably a new one, RD 810.

The photo is from south India, where could this registration be from?

Looking for suggestions.

Cheers harit

Wonder if it could be "Ramnad Division" ; or "Ramanathapuram District" in the old Madras Presidency.

Thanks for sharing - Was this D series the first series for Delhi? I can hardly imagine that in 1914 there were only 5 cars in Delhi...

EDIT - on checking I also have D2 as the Commander in Chief's Phantom III. Perhaps Delhi was reissuing numbers from the old days itself.

So by deduction, -3 cars were sold between 1914 and 1938

All kidding aside, I assume dealers were allotted set of plates, that were reused when a car was sold and got a regular registration number

Harit,
RD is Ramnad in the Madras Presidency.

Karl,
As far as we know black on white D was the first series in Delhi.
D2, D6 and D9 were all photographed in the 30s on 30s cars of officialdom so they obviously reissued many numbers in the early days.

Travancore,
The dealer plates stayed with the dealer and were used over and over again on any and all cars.

Cheers
Cedric

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Gents,
I need help again! This time I am searching for those of you who know Madhya Pradesh.
I have recently realized that I have several 1947-89 codes listed for MP that no photos exist of and therefore probably did not actually exist.
I have just now:
CI MP (Bhopal) 1973-9 photos do exist of CIx in the 70s
CP MP 1973-9 photos do exist of CPx in the 70s
MB MP (Bhopal) 1973-9 the photos I have of MBx all look like 50s to me so did this MP MBx series ever exist? 1950s MB was Madhya Bharat.
MI MP 1979- no photos so did this exist?
MK MP 1973-9 no photos so did this exist?
MO MP 1979- no photos so did this exist?
MP MP 1956-73 Lots of photos so no problem here
MQ MP 1979- no photos so did this exist?
MU MP 1979- one photo only (of MUK 8266 (commercial veh.)) that I can believe is 1980s.

With the 1979- series, I have found before that several on my list from different provinces were allocated but never used before the change in 1989. Somehow, someone must have got their hands on a list of 'new' codes to be introduced but all that is lost in the mists of time now sadly.
So, anyone have any thoughts please?
Many thanks
Cedric

Here is what I have
  • CIx - I have 4 records - CIB, CIN, CIQ and CIT
  • CPx - yes, multiple records, but maybe older than the 70s as well?
  • MBx - multiple records, but also 1970s cars.
  • MIx - I have MIC (60s car, re-registered?) and MIJ (70s/80s bike)
  • MKx - I have MKB (1970s car), MKO, MKU and MKQ
  • MOx - I dont have a record, but that doesn't discount it
  • MQx - I dont have a record, but that doesn't discount it
  • MUx - I have one, MUK 2752 1980s Bajaj scooter.

Karl,
Most useful. Many thanks indeed. Now all we need is to check MO and MQ.
CPx.....you say maybe older than the 70s also. Well, CPx was Central Province from 1939 to 1950. There are a few cases of old series being reused after a 20 or so year gap! Just confuses even more!
Cheers

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Can anyone say as to which city this scooter's registration (USS) is from ? I am told that it is Lucknow, whereas some say it is Sitapur. The scooter is now with me at Nagpur as its "n" th owner.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

In this neat post here (Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars), we see a Police van with registration POLICE 19.

In the past we have also seen POLICE 27 in a similar fashion, and also 66 CITY POLICE

Definitely Mumbai outside the town hall. I have a couple of pics from my grandfathers albums for the late 1920's to mid 30's where I have seen these Police plates
