Uttar Pradesh Car Registrations

Modifying my earlier post with regards to UP numbers . The first series when the 3 alphabet norm was established in Uttar Pradesh had the US & UP series running concurrently , the first series in Lucknow was USJ , whereas in Kanpur the first series was UPR & USK came later .
Surprisingly USA was shared by both Agra ( in the West ) & Gonda ( in the East ) with USA 1 to USA 5000 with the Agra RTO and 5001 to 9999 with Gonda RTO. UPL Varanasi . UPC Allahabad. UPF Jhansi ( The UPF 105 Rolls I saw in one of the links could be a Datia , Panna or a Charkhari car ). UPX Faizabad.UPM Mirzapur.
The US.. & UP.. series ran through till early 70's.

The other series since then were :

UT.. : 1973 onwards. UTW & UTZ were both Kanpur series
UR.. : late 70's
UH.. : early 80's
UA.. : 84
UG.. : mid 80's
UM.. : Late 80's
UV.. : Last alphabetical series before changing to UP ..

UP 01 to UP 07 belonged to districts which later formed Uttarakhand. So now UP 01 ~ 07 no longer exist.

Regards

So.....
Can someone tell me please what the Urdu translates to?
And, does anyone know about 1947-1956 Hyderabad letters?
Cheers
Cedric
Cedric.

The urdu letters read"trafic atraf balda" which literally translates into "traffic department for areas outside teh city municipal limits"

I dont think that plate is genuine though most if not all APX car were originally HYX

I recently visited Delhi, and took the opportunity to visit the Lal bahadur Shastri Memorial. A beautiful set up displaying his house and artefacts, it also has on display his early 60s Fiat Super Select (DLE 6).

A photo on display inside showed Shastriji in a Willys Jeep in Assam, dated 1965. The regn was AM 8519, the early 2 alphabet series.

Cedric, for starters do post pics of Indian plates that you would have access to.

wasif,
Many thanks for the translation. I have a very hard time reading Urdu when its written like that.

Karl,
Interesting that AM8519 is on a Willys Jeep. That means the vehicle cannot have been registered until after the war but AM is a pre-39 registration on my list. I guess as a senior minister/prime minister (was he prime minister when the photo was taken?) he got an old number reissued.

I will get some photos together of older Indian plates in people's collections. This one here is an OLD newspaper cutting of a van in Calcutta in 1931.
Cheers
Cedric

That is a Cadillac, not Dodge. The registration is from Pondicherry, and should still be valid there. Later they moved to Px xxxx series and then Pxxx, and finally I think PY 0x xx xxxx etc.

Hello Cedric,
I think that there are slight errors.
K 1233 can also be Bombay, this was the last series active when change came in 1940.
Bombay did not have "City Police XX, it was simply "POLICE XX". If you require I can send a photo.
BMW was April 1940 onwards.

This "P" registration is also seen on a Ponton Merc in Bangalore. Probably one of the oldest series still alive in India.

Today I purchased a registration book for a lorry of 1929, and it was dated in 1935. I will send a scan copy to you and it will throw out our theory as far as commercial vehicle registrations are concerned. It is completely out of sync.

Cheers harit

After the Px series they did eventually switch to PYx (eg. PYS, PYP, PYK etc.)
before the current PY 0x series.

Harit,
K was indeed the last single letter used in Bombay as well as the first in Karachi. K in Karachi was followed by KA and maybe even KB.
This K plate is known to have come from Karachi.

As for the Bombay police plate, it came from a very early collection. I know the man who owns it now and apparently you can see under the various layers of repaint that it was City Police previously. I guess they used different legends according to how the painter fancied. Why this one is yellow is a bit of a mystery also. The plate is very unusual in that it opens up to reveal nothing in particular on the back side. How and why is anyone's guess.
Cheers
Cedric

This 1946/48 Oldsmobile sedan attended a rally in Pune, 2003.

Early registration numbers in India-olds01.jpg

It bears a BYC regn - I assume that would have been an erstwhile Gujarat regn. Can anyone identify which city?
