Harit,
From what I know, Mysore before 1939 was only MS, MY and MYS.
From 1939-47 MYB,C,D,G,H,K,M,N,R,S,T
From 1947 they used all serial letters including MYX for Mangalore.
The car is about 1961 and the style of the plate is 1960s also.
I believe this is actually MYX 9090 but the owner had it made in pre-war style for some reason. It is not the first I have seen done that way but they are very rare.
Cheers
Cedric

Hi Cedtric,

The last of the series MYZ, CNZ & now KA12 are Kodagu (Coorg) Numbers. I agree this must be a MYX (Mangalore) number though the owner has tried by be smart. In Karnataka they say "Swalpa over"

MYS was Shimoga and MYM is Mysore

Re: Early registration numbers in India

KPS (& others),
I actually have the list of where all the letters are (must have been earlier on this thread I think) except we do not know if MYI existed and, if so, where it was.
Anyone know?
Cheers

Do you have pictures and history of that car? Did he have other cars too?

Since MY1234X was a system changed in 1939, it would have been too far away for someone to feel nostalgic in 1961 or later and recreate as number plate as per the old system.
But we have a habit of trying to have special numbers at all times, gold lettering, local language lettering, writings/symbols on the number plate, anything to be different. Maybe this was some kind of nostalgia too?

My father used to have trunkloads of pics, which were damaged, misplaced when we moved house way back in mid 90's - I have been trying to locate them, if I do, I will certainly post them....

Well he had 3 - 4 cars & my chacha had a Triumph Mobike, which he used to ride to Hindu College, Delhi. My father had an Austin, which he drove to college, there was another 6 cyl car which was for the family & more so my grand mother.

This is decades back, do not know if I will ever get my hands on any of those pics

Re: Early registration numbers in India

For those writing a doctorate on Indian registrations, here is a sample of "BYP". It did exist.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Harit,
Excellent, that is one more letter found.
I have a few photos of plates on vehicles that we have not been able to put a place of issue to.
Just to jog people's memories,
BYP on a truck,
BYU and BYX on taxis (probably taxis and trucks were in one series)
BYB BYC BYK BYN and BYZ on private (2 and 4 wheelers)

Cheers

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Here is some history sourced from "The Hindu" of 20th August 2003

The Hindu : Ushers of the Motor Age

Quote:
It was in 1894 that the first car was exhibited in Madras and made a run down Mount Road. In 1901, A.J. Yorke of Parry's brought a car back with him from `home leave' and became the first car owner in Madras - scaring the daylights of pedestrians, riders, and coach-horses and cart-bulls. Sir Francis Spring's was the first car to be registered in the South, MC-1 allotted to it in 1903. The first Indian-owned car was T. Namberumal Chetty's, MC-3, which he imported from France.
Cheers

Re: Early registration numbers in India

This Beete appears to be registered in Burma, or perhaps Sri Lanka? Slightly OT, but the guy appears to be an Indian. Can the registration be identified?

Re: Early registration numbers in India

I recently received a photo showing some Hyderabad cars. The registration series is HYX, but strangely they write the plates in different ways, sometimes HYX 1234 and other times 1234 HYX. Why was that so? Pictures of the plates are attached for reference.
Sorry, pictures are a but hazy.

Cheers harit

Is it just a coincidence that the registrations are within 3 numbers of each other I wonder ???
