For me, MHO makes sense as Pune commercial as MTO is similar.

I have quite a lot of letters sorted out but we still need to know where are MHV (commercial), MHY (private).
MHL is Kolhapur, as is confirmed by this parrot-beak Fargo, in Miraj, MH.

This Tata-Mercedes Benz, also MHL regd-

Note the meters, by VDO, licensee Yenkay.

Since these are in South MH, it is quite likely that they're Kolhapur, as I've hardly seen any MHL in Bombay/Poona.

Credits to the pics- BHPians Ram & someone else. Rishikesh, I think.

Within a decade, the following series are impossible- MHD, MHO, MHQ, MHF (?), MHL (?). So...... Nope- MHL is certainly Kolhapur.
Please remember that when a vehicle registered in a corner of Maharashtra is transferred to another corner, the number remains the same but yet all the formalities of NOC etc. remain the same. It is better to check with RTO to find out where a certain series was issued, and not go by vehicles seen on the road. If you see a lot of vehicles with similar registration, then there is a greater likelihood of that series being local.
BTW, Yenkay meters were manufactured in Bangaluru, they made meters for almost vehicles produced in India. Later there were changes with Siemens acquiring the Autometer business from VDO and this transfer affected India too. The Bangaluru plot was sold to a developer and the company renamed Continental Automotive Components when Continental acquired Siemens-VDO. I had visited that factory many years ago. They are in another area in Bangaluru. So much OT about Yenkay

Attached is a petrol rationing slip which may have been issued in the state of Bundi, Rajasthan. This may have been for a truck, a 19 HP vehicle, or a large car. The registration number was BND 44. So far I have not found any photo of a Bundi registered car.

Certainly a new series number, let's hear if there is more info out there.

Cheers harit

Cedric: Ask, and thou shalt recieve!

MHV is likely to have been Nashik, which would've ran parallel to MHW. Upto the mid 1970's perhaps- which implies that there could have been a commercial registration series for Nashik, prior to MHV.

Perhaps not- I'm not very sure. Following is a Tata 1210- still used as a beast of burden.
How about calling up the contact number given on the tanker, for exact details?

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Fintail,
How wonderful!
Rather than having MHV as Nashik (they had MHS for commercials) is there any chance that it was Amaravati? I have no commercial series recorded for there. MHR was Amaravati private.
Cheers

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Travancore,
That's a 30 day temporary number so I guess it is newly imported and awaiting approval and registration. I bet that import confused the authorities there

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Kartikeyal,
What a wonderful photo.
On my list I have that in the Madras Presidency from 1902 (or soon after), V was for Vizagapatam (Visakhapatnam on the Andra Pradesh coast). This is certainly the first photo from there that I know of.
Well done that man!
Cheers

Could you send the FB link as well?

MSP would be a typical Madras registration- of the 'Fifties.

Indeed. One of our relatives in Madras had a '47 Lincoln- MSP 3331.
