Re: Classics of Travancore, Cochin and Malabar

This is probably a 1955/56 Dodge Subarban--the station wagon version of the Kingsway.

"KLT-1" piques my interest. I am thinking it most certainly would have been a "Palace" car....what was it ?

Since the number of the car is not seen,I have no idea about this car. Also in the eighties Malayalam movie industry was more or less based in MADRAS and many imported cars shown in those movies had Tamil nadu registrations.

Prem,

Why are you "thinking" of this (KLT 1) as a "Palace Car". It was "the Palace Car". The Peacock Blue Studebaker President used by His Higness till 1985. 1955/56 model. I have been told by my uncles that the KLT 1 number was kept pending until the car arraived in Trivandrum and it could be Registered. Formation of Kerala State was on 1956 Nov 1st.

The car was bought by a London based Malayalee Business Man around early 1991 and it was taken to London (if one were to believe the press reports that came out at that time)

For comparison I am posting the picture of another 1956 model Studebaker President, which was in Kerala as well, with one Mr. Majeed Marikar. I came on to this info a while ago when trying to finf info on KLT 1.

(Pics and info courtesy
http://majeedmarikar.blogspot.co.uk/...label/Articles)

Foby - the Dodge station wagon - one I reacll was the one which was with the Police Department in Trivandrum - It was the DCP's car until 1969/70 or till the big petrol price hike of 1973. Originally it was painted the Dark Blue shade of Police Vehicles. It was latter bought by one of the film producers in south Kerala. This could be the vehicle.

Best Regards & Drive/Ride Safe

Thanks Ram! I had these visions of "KLT-1" as the mid 50's Palace Studebaker.

Then the rational side of the brain kicked in and said that cannot be.....since our 1950 Chevy Deluxe was KLT-501.

Now I connect the dots........these re-registartions possibly all date to the time "Kerala" was created.

The Palace also had a two tone Mk I / II Ambassador and a Vanguard I used to see all the time - in addition to the cream Mercedes which was the official "Temple Car"

Prem,

Small correction - the cream Merc became the official temple car only after "KLT 1" mis behaved some time in late 70s or early 80s. Till the HH used only the Stude. Once when HH was coming back from The Temple the Stude broke down near Palayam and HH very calm and quiet as he always was - got in to an AR and went to the palace. It was big news then in all TVM papers

After that it was the Cream Merc. I think that car is still in the Palace fleet.

First of all As per MVD records KLV-1 is a 1967 model ambassador car.
Moreover the insignia shown seems different from that of the Travancore palace (Bigger Conch,no swords).I have serious doubts whether the car has any connection to the palace and also about the genuiness of the Registration number. Which is the location where this photo was taken?

This Olds is a 1962 model, and the grill seems to have been customised. This is what it should have looked like, a similar car balow, slightly different though.

Cheers harit
