The Doors and Windows of the house in the background is definitely not of Kerala or even south Indian type. The UK angle seems to be the right one

Found this interesting piece on a Kerala made car Aravind online.

The story is set in the 1960s. The king of Thiruvithamkoor, Sree Chithira Thirunal, wanted to have a car of his liking. It was 1962, when the Portuguese had been driven out of Goa. A visit to Goa would help procure elegant European and American cars, the king was informed. The king's private secretary P V Thampi and a well-known automobile engineer of that time A K Balakrishna Menon set off to Goa. They returned with the concept of Aravind, the first ever car to be built in Kerala.

......what happened to Palace Special is not known, but the success encouraged Menon to make a car on his own. That was how Aravind took shape; it was much smaller and looked much like American and contemporary British models. One such car is still around, though more info regarding it needs to be dug out. It is also not clear if Menon built more than one car.

Hello Bimal. I remember seeing this car in Trivandrum. Believe Aravind had his workshop somewhere close to Thakaparambu Road. Memories dim after 50 years :(

His workshop was in the place where current parthas stands. Checked with my mother .

The founder was a friend of my grandfather apparently. In fact this car was there for my grandfather's funeral ( he died young and Trivandrum was a small town then). Yes my grandfather was an auto/photo enthusiast. We are still in thampanoor , Trivandrum.

Will try to dig up those photos.

An interesting photo from my maternal Grandfather's family (Nilambur Kovilakom). I have heard him say that the Head of the family bought a new Ford every year. This one looks pretty beat up though :(

Grandfather's 1948 Wolseley Eight is now in the Geedee Museum, Coimbatore. The registration is not authentic though.

Nilambur (Malabar) belonged to the then Madras Presidency.

I do think it is likely a Chevy as well (likely 1931). The attached photo shows similar curved headlamp cross bar and bumpers.



And yes Ram, my wife was struck by the resemblance to someone she knows as well

I don't know the history of the car. The car is with the current owner for last 30+ years and they converted it to RHD locally (Kothamangalam, Cochin).

Is this a known car ??

The picture purportedly taken by HH. The guest travelling in the car could be Lady Edwina Mountbatten on a visit to Trivandrum in 1948

This is the Mysore Daimler DE36, with the Queen and H.H. Maharaja of Mysore at Bangalore / Mysore, 1961.

I believe she met H.H. Uthradom Thirunal at Bangalore and they discussed the Ivory Throne, gift from Travancore to Queen Victoria.
