Re: Renault classic cars in India

@SuperSelect: Wasn't it a yellow R4?

I was with my father when I spotted it, so we stopped and had a good look at it. Took a lot of snaps too. Will upload them soon.

Apparently, UNICEF provided a lot of R4s (white bodywork with the UNICEF logo and the red cross) to India during the late '60s to the early '70s. My father's uncle was a doctor and he had one of these and my father (in school at the time) got quite a few rides in the R4.

The info about the R4s lying in the health department is new to me! Gotta check 'em out on my next trip to my hometown, Nagpur!

Yes, it was indeed yellow. Do post pictures whenever you can.

I too have seen a number of UNICEF Renaults here and there, but I remember them as being white..

Re: Renault classic cars in India

Then it's the same car I saw. And the yellow seemed like the original shade. Dad & I speculated that it might have been separately imported, unlike the white UNICEF cars.

I'll post the pics later today.

Re: Renault classic cars in India

And, as promised, here are the pics. The car was in bad shape. As far as the design's concerned, the overall outline looks surprisingly contemporary. It's got compact dimensions with the now-commonplace tall-boy stance. One look at the car and you know why it's considered a design classic. Noteworthy bits include the sliding front window, the quirky rear window outline, the hatch and the windscreen line continuing straight into the fender. Also notable are the spartan interiors with lots of space. Very, very neat.

This yellow Renault is in all probability a ex-UN car.
Are you going to buy and do it up?

Re: Renault classic cars in India

That is an intresting Renault 4GTL(?) right? a very reliable car and still very much in use in Europe. While in the Netherlands last year I photographed many of these daily runners on the street, this one was in the city of Harlem I think.

The yellow example posted above is quite restorable and can make a quirky daily runner ride for someone.

I don't think so. These pics are from about a couple of years ago. If I come across it again, I just might!

Yes it is! Good to know it's still in use. Sourcing parts shouldn't be so difficult then.

Must be a fun ride for sure!

Re: Renault classic cars in India

Over the past few months I have been seeing a neglected Renault 6 hatch junking at Chor Bazaar. Saw it last week too.

I am now happy to report that I saw the car being towed towards Pune on the highway yesterday. I assume it has been saved.

Re: Renault classic cars in India

Hello All,
I have recently joined this august forum and would deeply appreciate if someone could post the latest record of Renault Vintage owners in India or abroad. I am myself a Renault 1912 vintage owner, looking to update my record & connects.

Thanks in advance for your valuable response to this old post.
