Wow! The A40 Devons certainly seem to be the second commonest (after the Morris Minor) find on vintage car hunts in Kolkata! John, can you tell me where this car is in South Kolkata? It seems to be in much better/restorable condition than the earlier A40 I spotted.

Re: KOLKATA - Cars waiting to be Restored or Scrapped!

First we get his stick, then comes a carrot. Meanwhile he talks of V12 engined Duessys. There are hardly any V12 engined Vintage cars in India, Auburn, Daimler and.... Duessys? This Duessy does not exist, and probably none of those carrots too. We have travelled this road before.

To bring back Kolkata and cars, Kolkata did have 2 Duessys, one of which has only the engine surviving.

Cheers harit

Re: KOLKATA - Cars waiting to be Restored or Scrapped!

Folks, why this Kolaveri di, da, whatever? @fiestarry has only said what my wife has been bemoaning for years...

Talking of cars in Calcutta that are being revived, here's one from the rusting (or resting) thread that no braveheart will go to save I'm sure, but how about someone getting hold of that much-sought-after steering wheel (looks remarkably intact in the pic from here), indicator cluster, and whatever else? The engine might be good too, and who knows the elusive barrel-type airfilter might also be there. The off-putting garbage around might just have been a protector!!! http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/vintag...ml#post2753947

Well said Prabal. Now back to the topic at hand.

That Fiat can be an art installation in itself - what a sight!

As space comes more and more at a premium these days, a car junked to this level is such a rare sight, which will soon vanish altogether.

This is the same black car from Howrah that a lawyer owned. This car now belongs to a Delhi based collector who's brother lives in Calcutta. There is also a Vauxhall with this car. This is a 4 cylinder English Citroen by the way.

Re: KOLKATA - Cars waiting to be Restored or Scrapped!

Just bought this car in the border of west bengal and Bihar. The car has just arrived at the workshop in kolkatta. Was looking for one for a very long time. Almost everything is there but need a lot of attention.

Congratulations yardshark for your new buy.Welcome to the club of Landmaster owners. The car appears to have been in a fit condition till I guess at least about 15 or may be 20 years ago.
You will have a challenging job, restoring this one but ultimately it will be a rare peice in India. There are just one or two of such woodies surviving.Do start a separate thread and keep us posted on the details.
The owner has not at all fiddled with her originality. Even the tail lights are original. He could have easily got some odd tail lights fitted- the Premier Padmini's would have been ideal. The dash is usually the target of mod- jobs but here it is intact and so is the side valve engine. The gear lever is vintage Landmaster!

Wow, what a dream to find! Well done - these were so rare even when new.

Good luck with the restorartion and do keep us updated. What is the state of the woodwork? Corrosion appears controllable, but pictures are deceptive.

Whenever possible do share some detailed pictures of the interiors, the rear bay etc. There is almost no frame of reference for us!

Congratulations, great find. Lookat those ivory knobs on the dash, wow! Is this a HM Landmaster or a Morris Traveller? Rare car either ways, but there are more than one or two still around as someone pointed out, so don't go by that! Are the rear doors (tail gates) there, though not in the pics? Congrats once again! I can sense some angst amongst the profiteering junta of the vintage&classic world, who sell these at 7 lakhs and thereabouts!
