Oops! It is indeed Kolkota! Sorry for the incorrect claim!
The blogs I checked before posting the pic here claimed the pic to be of the road opposite the clock tower in Old Mysore. This led to the incorrect claim! Sorry again!

Anjanji, it is Kolkata but that is not The Grand Hotel. The hotel is much further away and not visible in the picture. This structure today is in shambles and decrepit with some offices in it.

The building with the tall domes adjacent to it is the Metropolitan Building which used to house Whiteway & Laidlaw, the fanciest and largest department store in India during the Raj and I believe the best in Asia till the 1950s! Today, the building belongs to the LIC of India. They did a thorough and faithful restoration of the entire building some 10 years back and it looks super

Prithvi

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Assuming any of these haven't been posted before- one from the 1930s-40s showing Netaji alighting from a car- which one?

And the other two of the 1st General Elections in Delhi, Jan. 19512. The Van's Ford Anglia-based? Couldnt identify the carsq in the last pic. though.

Going by the wheel design I would say maybe late 30s V8 Ford?

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

These were shared by a young friend, Samanyu on facebook- the '53 Chevy was originally an Ambulance, later bought by his grandfather as an office car.
The Pennant in the second pic. was his grandfather's first car, bought from Nizam Sugars and sold in 1975, replaced by a 1977 mk3 Amby, which they still have. They also own this '73 Premier President, which was present in the local Deccan Heritage shows.

The '53 Chevy should be an entry level 'One-Fifty' going by the absence of trim (assuming originally delivered that way), though I can't seem to find reference to any 2 door models, only 4 door.

And in continuation, here is footage of the Pope again during his 1964 visit, though still no sign of the Lincoln.

In the cavalcade we see a 1960 Impala (with panoramic rear glass) and Ashoka head emblem followed by a 1955 Dodge Kingsway.

We saw the same Dodge Kingsway in a 1969 parade with Neil Armstrong (again thanks to travancore). Wonder if it survives.

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Dear Karl - in the pope film of 1964, you can see the "Pope Jeep". It is a 1964 model CJ3BLHD, it was never registered so it never had a number plate. It still survives in pristine condition and is displayed in the foyer of the main office building inside Kandivli plant. The original pope's plaque in front of the grille is also there. It is never taken out of the plant. It would be moved only by Mr.Naresh Bhosle when the office building got painted, then it would go back on display. He used to be very particular about this Jeep and took care of it very nicely (he has retired now). It is one of my favorite Jeeps. When the pope visited India in 1964, he was driven in this Jeep by Mr.Baptist D'Souza who later went on to become the executive director of the company. You can see Mr.D'Souza driving the vehicle.

I remember the pope's visit as a 7 year old child, we had stood outside mahim bus depot which is opposite the mahim church to see the procession. Thanks for reviving wonderful memories.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Dear DeClutch 4X4 - yes, it is the same Jeep, I just love it because CJ3B LHD is my dream Jeep. With the kind of heritage it has, this Jeep is priceless! It was restored in 1994, painted in Dilip Chhabria's workshop.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Found this picture in our old family album, apart from the three ambassadors , which is the other car ? Most interesting is the van/bus/camper ?

Picture is from 70's and maybe from Ajmer or Jaipur.

To me it looks like a Bedford or VW based camper. The Classic gurus will be able to clarify it further.

Best Regards & Drive Safe

It is a Commer Camper.

Remember having a 1/43 scale Commer van as a child - can't remember who it was made by (it was an Indian company)

Judging by the 3-bolt wheels, the shape of the suicide door, placement of the door hinges and the petrol inlet, this could be a much battered 1946/47 Hillman Minx based Commer.

B&W pics of the earlier and the much later generations of Commers back-to-back on the same page !! What are the odds of that happening?
