Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Once upon a time in Poona.....

This pic seems to be dated from sometime in the mid 'Fifties. The bus, would've been run by the Bombay State roadways- Would've been later transferred to the MH State Road Transport Corporation- I guess.

The bus itself looks like an Albion to me. It is an RHD, and the chassis is an Albion one, and the body- is perhaps locally made. More likely not.

Note the livery- looks perfect, wot? And the ST logo- enclosed within a triangle.

All in all, a really lovely pic- of a really lovely bus. 'Never knew that the BSRTC (Bombay State RTC - made the term meself ) also operated Albions, once upon a time, apart from the usual Mercedes Benz, and the occasional Guy. I wonder where this bus operated. Poona, Baramati, Bhigwan....Maybe even South MH, such as Kolhapur, or Satara. Who knows?

The registration, is, obviously, Pune, of the mid 'Fifties. BYL.

So, ladies and gentlemen, without further ado, I introduce to thee, BYL 9191 (Nice number, no?)

Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars-byl-9191.jpg

Does she still survive? Note the front rims. Six decades on...I can't help but notice that the Volvo 9400 has similar looking rims. XD

Photo Credits: Not sure where I got the pic from. Due credits to the original poster.

Thanks!

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

A BYL (in all probability- The bus is BRAND NEW here) registered Mercedes Benz L-312.

BYL is a Pune number- from sometime in the mid-Fifties. The bus in question was used by the Bombay Presidency Road Transport Corporation.

Who built the bus bodies here? Was it Tata? The body is slightly different, as compared to other one's I've seen. The bus has a different livery, as compared to the Albion I've posted above. Used for different, and perhaps shorter routes, like Pune-Daund or something, perhaps!

So, Ladies and gentlemen, let us walk back into 1955; and picturize a brand new (Tata) Mercedes Benz in front of us.

Say hi- To BYL something :

Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars-tata_city_bus.jpg-byl.jpg

Note the inscription marked just behind the first front door. IIRC, this used to have information, such as tire pressure etc. A Tata 1210 Bus that I used to see regularly ( MWQ 8903- Come on! I went to school in that- regularly. Was 'intimately' familiar with it. Bus was scrapped in 2014) used to have all that (tire pressure- etc) written in the same place.

Last but not the least- Note the advertisement boards mounted on the roof. So nicely mounted, and the advertisements were quite clear, and visible, then. Nowadays, these PMPML (Pune Municipal) buses have huge advertisement banners transfixed over all over them, wrapped in a useless manner. They appear loud, on-your-face--, and those buses habitually spew out diesel. Ah- the smoke! And they're overloaded as well. The chassis seem twisted and bent- Reminding you, at times, of a salsa dancer. LOL.

You don't want to even want to see those buses, forget the advertisements on them. Ah- The Fifties were a lot cleaner, a lot greener, wot?

Photo Credits : Same as mentioned in my previous post, concerning an Albion.

Thanks!

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Here's a nice one involving an Austin A40...

Quote:
Motor Gas Case: On January 18, 1949, as a result of information received by the Intelligence Branch of the Bombay Custom House on Austin A-40 motor car which arrived by the S.S. “DUMRA” from KOWELT was detained before clearance from the Docks. A through examination of the car revealed gold bullion and coins very cleverly concealed in the radiator. The water compartments at the top and at the bottom of the radiator had been broken open at the joints and re-soldered after the gold was concealed therein. The strainer under the radiator filled with water. A total quantity of 4136.10 tolas of gold valued at Rs. 4,75,651/- was recovered from the radiator. The gold and the car were confiscated under the provisions of the Sea Customs Act. It was impossible to trace the importer, the name furnished in the Import documents was found to be bogus.

The car would have been just a year old at the time, though looks quite beaten up.

Not a very old pic this one, prolly just a decade or so old. I found this on the consultant's desk; his pride and joy.
Apparently, he owned this car for quite a while and had to sell it off due to some reason. The car has supposedly been fully restored now and survives.

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

.................Of Calcutta's assortment of colorful and intriguing characters, the Sikh taxi-driver and his co-pilot rank high. The co-pilot was added in 1944 following an affair in which a soldier knifed a driver.

The two American soldiers shown here are doing their best to convey their destination to the driver of the ancient jalopy.

Interestingly, we used to have similar looking 'meters' in those FIAT Taxies of Bombay- Not too long ago!
