What a nice shot of Park Street!

The diplomatic car is exiting from Russell Street. The building seen curving around both Russell Street and Park Street says 'Galstaun Mansions'. The Galstaun family were amongst the wealthiest and influential families of Calcutta, and were originally from Armenia. They had several vast mansions in the heart of town. Some of the others were 'Galstaun Court' and 'Galstaun Palace'. Sadly, one generation was apparently a bit too fond of gambling. Galstaun Mansions was lost on a wager and renamed Queen's Mansions. Galstaun Court too was lost in a similar manner and renamed Palace Court. And Galstaun Palace was apparently lost over a game of cards during New Year's eve to the Nizam of Hyderabad and renamed Nizam Palace! All 3 buildings survive. In their day, the Galstaun family made significant philanthropic contributions but they have largely been forgotten.

On the near left of the photograph is where Park Hotel is situated today. At the far left end is a multi-domed building, Park Mansions. Like most of Park Street, it remains largely unchanged and today belongs to the Paul's of the Park group.

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

These superb photos were shared on facebook recently, shot an old Statesman event in Calcutta, I assume in the 70s. Some cars we can recognise, like the Renault, since they have been participating consistently maybe 50 years or more!

Can the experts identify this car?
Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars-img_3429.jpg

This Austin too has been participating regularly.

This car I don't recognise to be honest. Over to the experts.

Some lovely cars of Sir Dhunjibhoy Bomanji, mostly taken at their house "The Willows", Windsor. The photo of the Standard is likely in India

Lady Dhunjibhoy's R-R Silver Ghost is posted in the R-R Thread.

The Bomanji residence at Harrogate remained frozen in time for 30 years after her death:

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Indeed Rawalpindi. Photo is at Murree hill station or enroute . You can barely read Murree on the advertising on the luggage carrier.

Most vehicles boiled over and had their radiators topped up and doused in cold water at Churrapani, which has a natural spring with a healthy flow of ice cold water, half way to 7000 ft high Murree. I guess shock cooling was not heard of at that time.
Post partition, most taxis to Murree were either 1955/56 Chevrolet Impala or 1957-60 Opel Rekords.Later replaced by the Morris Minor 1000. Lorries were invariably Bedford.

Present day cars do not take any breather and boiled radiators are unusual. Plus the excellent dual carriageway road helps.
People still stop at Churrapani for scalding hot Pakoras at the roadside, which have a faint hint of kerosene from the stoves, mixed with scent of pine trees. Sublime. Amer Ahmad
