Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

This is some great nostalgia!

Posted by Mr. N J Ravi Chander in the FB Page of "Bangalore - Photos from a Bygone Era"

Quote:
A very interesting motor-car trip was made early in 1914 by H E Ormerod and a friend, the route being from Bangalore to Bombay and back. The car was a 10hp Calthorpe" Minor Light Car, and it was proposed that the outward journey should be accomplished in four days. Rivers had to be crossed, and some of the roads in the Mysore State were execrably bad, but no mechanical troubles of any kind were experienced during the trip, and only one puncture occurred. Mr. Ormerod was the sole agent in South India for these Calthorpe cars, as also for the Empire cars and he was agent for the well-known "Studebaker" and "Fords". The skilled mechanics employed by Mr. Ormerod dealt with all kinds of repairs to motorcar or cycle. The store was well stocked with petrol, covers, tubes and other accessories. Mr. Ormerod supplied cars for the personal use of the Maharaja of Mysore. Picture from the book "Southern India" by Somerset Playne shows the exterior view of the H E Ormerod store on South Parade.

From the above description, the two small cars are the 10hp Calthorpe. The one with the round radiator is a Delaunay-Belleville.

What are the other cars? The car in the extreme right could be a Daimler, but the picture is very grainy to clearly identify the fluted radiator

Cheers

Few photographs from my Grand Uncles' collection from the very first Statesman rally in Delhi (of which he incidentally was the editor of at the time). He's in the first photo during the flag off

Thanks Shivraj, these truly fit the term "Nostalgic". It is really nice to see these cars from a different perspective, not to mention the registrations for a history buff like me.

Keep them coming.........

The larger cars are the Alwar Lanchester 40HP "Throne Car"; the Cooch Behar Delaunay-Belleville 1908; and the Rewa Double Roof Lanchester 40HP in that order.

As per Wikipedia

Quote:
Samikannu Vincent was the first person to build a cinema theater in South India. He built the Variety Hall (now Delite Theatre) in Coimbatore in 1914.

Thanks so much for sharing these - this is a treasure! And further thanks for not branding them

I wonder in what condition the throne Lanchester is in now. I believe it is still in Alwar though locked up. What a fine project it would make. And don't miss the row of Fiats and Ambys in the back - how ironic that they would have been brand new in these photos, and participants today!

In which year was the first event held?

Attached is a photo of the Lanchester with the number plate removed. It also appears to have been cleaned up, the paint is in much better condition. That car was subsequently exported and believed to be in Germany. Maybe even passed on.
The slots in just below the roof line were meant for cooling.

Cheers harit
