Looks like Dadabhai Nowroji Road to me which connects Flora Fountain to VT. But, not being a Mumbaikar, I could be mistaken .

Hi Harit. I was curious about the Nabha Silver Ghost and I find it a bit confusing when you the use term smuggled.

Could you care to elaborate? A Google search shows the car running as recent as 2016.

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

A good friend of mine who is part of the Mysore Royals, was kind to share some pictures of their family cars

This beautiful car has stumped quite a few of us. It is surely a great marque. However is it American or European, is very difficult to say. Request the experts to try and identify this car. Picture taken in Bangalore

Lovely car KPS. It is a ca 1928 Minerva AFS (32-34 CV) with coachwork by Vanden Plas, Brussels.

It is likely that two of these cars came to India.

Sorry for the back to back to back posts!

1928 Minerva AFS 32-34 CV; coachwork by Vanden Plas, Brussels

The car shown above was built for the Captain of the British Polo Team.

It is a sister car to that for an "Indian Prince" and identical in almost every respect. The Indian Prince car (rumoured to be for the "Prince of Hyderabad") was dark blue with a black lizard skin and Maccassar Ebony woodwork interior; and 14K carat gold plated hardware. The personal crest took the place of the usual Minerva Goddess on the hood.

This decription is from the memory of Count de Sakhnoffsky, the car's designer. Since the interview was many decades after the actual car, the details could be blurred!

Now, with KPS's photo, it is likely that may be 2 similar cars landed on our shores........or is the Mysore car the same as the "Indian Prince" car ? The mystery continues.

Thanks Travancore for the identification of the car as the Minerva.

What a wonderful car. Had unique turn signal fitted above the parking lights in the form a ball.

Though the query is addressed to Harit, I can share some info on this comment.

At the height of "Revived Indian Nationalism" in 1969, a lot of things which were under private ownership was "nationalised.

As part of this and as an effort to preserve our heritage, it was decided to prevent export of the "vintage cars from India. As cars from 1904 were in India and pre war and post war cars were there in sizable numbers.

It also so happened that in that period itself Classic and Vintage cars were becoming becoming "big money" in the western hemispere following "worldwar ushered prosperity or new money"

The classic/vintage cars were being sold off to buyers from west in sizable numbers and this was like selling off one part of India Heritage, hence a "ban was propsed and imposed"

However, people found ways still, to export the cars by either driving them accross to Nepal (as border checks were minimal those days) and then shipping them overland through China etc, or even dismantling them and exporting them along with scrap metal by merchant/tramp ships etc. This of course was a clandestine illegal act.

Hence, the reference to "smuggling".

Chapter 87 of this link show the following link shows "vintage cars of pre 1950 Cars and pre 1940 Bikes being listed "banned".

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Here is a beautiful 1936-37 Morris 18/6 from Ooty, Nilgiris. The Standard at the back indicates that the picture could have been taken in the 1960's
