Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

My Vauxhall - Velox 1950 model six cylinder straight engine. The car was purchased by my father in 1950 from Bombay general Motor Company.

The car is very good to drive long distance without any problem. In 1975 i made an adventurous trip from Thrissur to Kodaikennel via Munnar - Mattupetty - Top station, Annamalai - Berjam - Kodai through jungle road made during second world war by the British Army to evacuate the Army from Kodai camp to Cochin Port in order to escape from the probable Japanese bombardment at Kodai Camp. So this road is called the Great Escape Road.

But unfortunately there is no road now. This road was a short cut to Kodai from Munnar about 60 miles. There was about 32 hairpin bends mud jeep road in 1975. This route is full of wildlife and can see lot of elephants on the way.

Return back we choose Thenni - Thekkady - Kottayam route to Thrissur.

Congratulations and compliments to you for maintaining a car in such pristine condition for almost 7 decades. She looks beautiful in a natural way - the way she was in 1950. a lot of vintage/classic cars get refurbished to a super polished & painted look which while attractive is artificial. Your car looks like she did when new. Thank you for sharing these shots.

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

I stumbled upon this 80's video of Valanchery, Kerala. The taxi stands, Ambassadors, Mahindras and Willys, KSRTC buses, KAL API autorickshaws, the simple laid back life, the absence of smart-everything ..nostalgic.

Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars-hyderabad-mercury-eight-1947.jpg

This is supposed to be Hyderabad, though the registration looks unusual.

The car should be a 1946 / 1947 Mercury Eight.

Yes, and it is interesting to note the CHN 2 registration was probably put on during the filming of A Passage to India. CHN 1 was used on a Buick in the same movie. The Bentley is registered MDN.

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Make up artist Anthony Clavet can be seen in this Clive Arrowsmith photograph, (1970) captured in the parking lot of Rambagh palace, Jaipur.

I will leave my last words for my dear friend and genius make up artist Anthony Clavet, standing waiting with his camera to go to the desert with me. Wearing the most incredible sunglasses and this white traditional Indian outfit that we both wore throughout the trip.

I doubt the picture dates to 1970 - that number plate light on the Amby I think debuted around 75/76? On the last of the Mark 2s probably. Ditto for taillights.

You must be right as usual, I got the date from the website and quoted the same, though it could be 1979 and maybe a typo by the author.
