Stuff of Legends. Thanks for the detail story and the pics. The "endless lengthy negotiations" must have needed steel nerves on part of your father. I would have turned to jelly and sold all my property to buy that Alfa at the asking price.

This was a common sight at Changla Gali, between Murree hill station and Rawalpindi. Cars travelling up would stop at the Changla gali turn where a ice cold natural spring spilled over the road. Local boys would splash cold water onto the radiators of cars to cool them as most would be boiling at that time. This probably led to early demise of the rapidly cooled engine, but who cared then. On way back, especially Bedford lorries and trucks, got the same treatment on their extremely hot drum brakes with steam issuing forth. While this cooling was being done, the families took opportunity to stretch their legs, fight the nausea and best of all a quick bite on the Basin Pakoras being cooked over kerosene stoves by the road side vendors. The Pakoras with a distinct, not unpleasant, aroma of kerosene ( Miti ka tail) are etched in the memories of all and sundry. I think this would be true for all the innumerable hill stations in India too.

My father prided on his 1961 Ford Consul not needing this treatment while my uncles 1956 Chevrolet definitely did. In this fine photo, it seems the car had other ides before reaching a cooling spot.

Car is unknown at the moment, although, me thinks its an early 50's sedan. Happy to know more from the experts.

Thanks for sharing. Looks to be a Hillman Minx, likely Mark V, around 1951/52? Note the swan (?) hood ornament - a popular accessory at the time.

The car is retained by the family in superb original condition. Note the same spot light and sunshade - such a treat to see genuine accessories versus later add-ons.

I was going through an old photo album, and came across these pictures clicked by my grandfather. The boy in the picture is my uncle, aged around 8, which would mean this photo was taken circa 1950.
