The chrome "eyelid" was a period accessory, I've seen many old gen cars with these. Even karl's grandpa's Herald in Madras had them in the 60s.
I guess the rule of having just a dot in the centre came later there.

I dont think it is fitted to the ring but to the headlight assembly itself, probably with the same fastening screws that the headlight is fixed with?
Oh yeah, I just remembed my Standard Companion is fitted with these too (only one left) I can find out by checking it out on this car, but would take time I guess, since the front is not easily accessible where it is parked now! So would probably be only when it is getting restored.

I'm not sure if these are currently available either.

Mole,

As Stanher said, it fixed to the top 3 screws that fixes the the haed light beam to the body of the car - eg: - the three screws we use to adjust the beam in the Amby and Fiats. The eye lid is just a very thin steel - plated or stainless piece (about 2 mm thick) matching the curvature of the beam glass . Yo know that there is enough spce left between the outer ring and the beam to accommodate the thickness of the "eye lid"

During second world war (hear say) 1962 (China) 1965 & 71 War (our friendly neighbour) the half black paint - was a blackout regulation. Only when the war fears receded the dot was introduced/became the norm.

Best Regards & Drive/Ride Safe

This Eye lids (as called by Shyam) have a grove or a step kind at the edge of the thin steel half circle shade which sits between the ring and the glass, and then the glass along with the beam pressed onto the ring clips. there is no need of any screw fitting or fitment required to fix this accessory.

These were the period accessory in those days for cars and bikes, there is another accessory which even you can see now-a-days mostly on bullets the cap kind of thing attached to the head lamp ring again.

That's interesting, I didnt know that! All this while I thought it was a rule by the RTO that was always enforced! In that case, how come the half-black regulation has remained in all other states of India even after the wars? And does it still exist even today? I was told by an electrician that it doesnt?

Anonymous Parsi Gent:

Came across a whole lot of photos where this particular gent is pictures. These photos came in 3 lots, there are many more.
Presumably they start from around 1928, and go on beyond 1950. This gent seems to have been both a car and bike lover, and he proundly posed with them throughout his life. Many pictures were taken outside the Gateway of India, one can see the Taj, old Hotel Greens )pulled down to make way for the Taj Tower and road alignment), and the Yacht Club.
The first car in the series is not positively identified, he had both pre-war and posr-war Morris's, 1939 Buick, among bikes a BMW, Jawa and an unidentified early bike are seen. I have tried to post the pics in a sequence as he aged. He is always with some vehicle, wife (presumably) is seen only in the second pic.
Calling on all Parsis to show these pics to elders to try and identify him.
Also, please try to identify the cars.
What is the bike where he is sitting on a bench in the background?
The BMW registered car is NOT a Ford Model T.
Have a look at the second pic. This car is registered MDU in Tamil Nadu, is a special creation, and MAK 3 is written on the bonnet. Does anyone have a clue as to what this special is? Any Chennai?Coimbatore connections?
So many pictures, so many querries. Hope to receive some answers, and comments.

Cheers harit

Must've been a real lover of automobiles.
Hope one of us too adorns this thread in a similar fashion, maybe fifty years from now !

Nice collection of pics.! And this one is particularly interesting! MDU was a Madurai regn. Although the pic. seems to have been taken in a place with colder climate, maybe Ooty. This seems to be some kind of a custom-built kit car, maaybe built on the chassis of another car. The wheels look too small for cars of that period though.

Overland very likely, but not the Cowley. That car is of another make.

Well, you are thinking far ahead. First, in your life time you have to ensure that your photographs are kept and not thrown out. These photos which I get are more often than not thrown out. Strangely, portrait photos are not thrown out, they land up on the wall with a garland.

I suspect that the Parsi gent visited a hill station like Ooty or Kodai, saw this special and posed for a photo.
As regards the MDU registration, I have not come across any creative car builders in Madurai. So, here I presumed that someone used an existing number from a dead or slaughtered car and created this special, duly registered. Creative car builders are more likely to be found in Chennai or Coimbatore than Madurai. It looks like scooter tyres have been fitted on these wheels. Maybe someone from there can help?

Cheers harit

That car is almost certainly an Overland. There is a similar car with Jodhpur.

And to find out who the person is - try this!

Harit,

A good friend - Joji Kurien - is pretty sure that the bike is DKW NZ 350 or NZ 250.

My guess is that it is a NZ 250 (see the attached picture - the Tank Stickering is slightly different on the picture I am posting)

Best Regards & Drive/Ride Safe

Any Lamby lovers out there?
This is a Lamby, MHM or MHN registered, cannot read the numbers.
The building in the background looks majestic. Any idea where this is?

Cheers harit
